A Pella hardware store lacks its usual Holland imported wooden shoes. Despite orders, shipments fail this year. A local shoemaker will carve shoes for the Tulip Festival but cannot meet demand.
Walter C. Eells executive secretary of the American Association of Junior Colleges will address the Iowa junior college conference at Drake University. Faculty representatives and students from Iowa junior colleges will attend to discuss helpful studies and services. The Saturday conference is part of a nationwide series of 25 meetings.
In Genterville 14 year old Lewis Henderson son of Mr and Mrs Everett Henderson was attacked by an owl nesting near his home. He walked past the tree the owl sat in when it swooped down striking his face and eye. The eye was pierced and lost and his injuries included extensive facial abrasions.
Haakon Rivedal, 24, son of Mr and Mrs Rivedal, left Mason City to Ottawa to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. A Norwegian citizen, he recently completed flight instruction here and was informed by Canadian authorities of acceptance. He previously failed twice to join Finland and Norway air forces. He was born in Norway and brought to the United States at age about four.
Ames reports the Veishea agricultural field day will showcase a new endless bell mold board plow. Edward Dugger of Rose Hill and A Hefley of Oskaloosa demonstrate a draft reducing plow with a four belt drive using dirt power, eliminating the need for a power take off.
Judge J G Patterson directed a verdict for Washington county as Prymek's suit seeking 2650 dollars for road abandonment in Highland township was dismissed. County Attorney Richard A Stewart had moved for the directed verdict and the court sustained it. Plaintiffs plan to appeal to the supreme court. A separate Washington county road case involving a different legal point was argued before the Iowa supreme court.

Howard C. Hopson former head of the Associated Gas and Electric company system and three associates were indicted by a federal grand jury on mail fraud and conspiracy charges. They allegedly defrauded investors of more than $20 million in a scheme connected to the billion dollar utility.

Orville Long was severely burned this morning around 9 00 at the Americas Petroleum gas station on South Iowa avenue and Jefferson street when tar gushed from a plugged barrel as he poured tar on the walk. He was taken to a physician for treatment.
