Column recalls Rth B B Sturgeon of Council Bluffs who died Thursday as the fifth victim in a Los Angeles shooting incident near South Pasadena High School. He was an instructor in Iowa from 1917 to 1920.
For the second straight day a bus traveler was robbed in Davenport. A Utah man lost $30 to two men near the bus station on Wednesday. On Thursday Phillip Smith of Sacramento, California, was robbed of $50 while counting his money.
Norman Felger of Davenport, 35, arraigned before Police Magistrate John J. McSwiggin under 10000 dollar bond for robbery with aggravation. He had been sought over a year for the Lage drug store holdup, where clerk was forced to floor with head down. Elmer Jones serves 50 years at Fort Madison for his part in the robbery.
A Waterloo jury deliberated about four hours and awarded Charles Hrady $1000 and his fiancée Hazel Knudsen $20 for damages from a March 14, 1989 automobile collision. Hrady sought $9700 and Knudsen $200 from John M. Bradford, the other driver in Waterloo.
Deputy Sheriff Van W Harmon acted quickly when Ora McLean, 20 months, wandered near a stairwell on the second floor of the Pottawatta mile courthouse during habeas corpus proceedings. The child squeezed through the railing as his mother Isa belle McLean shouted, and Harmon seized the child's foot pulling him to safety from a potential fall.
The Washington county district court heard depositions in the Blanche Greiner administratrix v Hicks case seeking 10000 in damages for Daniel Greiner and Blanche Greiner. The trial focuses on statements from Downers Grove residents with witnesses including a police officer and a photographer. The Hicks truck struck another vehicle at Downers Grove along Ogden avenue and Forrest avenue near the town. Jurors were excused for possible recall as this could be the last case tried in this term.
Rudolph Mendes a 33 year old Mexican railway section worker fatally stabbed his wife Nola 36 and then killed himself with a butcher knife at their second story Muscatine apartment. Sheriff Nesper said Mendes had threatened to kill her on several occasions. Nola died from eight knife wounds after staggering outside and collapsing. Mendes died minutes later.
Dorothy Luepke testified she kept two sets of books under orders from employer A. L. Pollock to conceal transactions from Pollock’s wife. She denied defrauding Pollock, a motor dealer, of $2,587.87 between March 1, 1937 and April 20, 1938.
Washington music lovers heard John Lloyd Hughes baritone and Paul Fry harpist in a pleasing recital at the Presbyterian church. Hughes impressed with Refined voice and Frimls Song of the Vagabonds and I Love Life. Fry offered graceful harp solos including Believe Me, Annie Laurie, and Schone Erinnerung. Tonight the Morrell Male Chorus of Ottumwa directed by Jesse J. Miller will give a concert at 8 in the Methodist church.
The Congress hotel restaurant operated by Harvey and Warfel closes after 46 years. Partners D. W. Harvey and R. Warfel began in 1894, later expanding to the hotel in 1910 and building the Congress complex. Health concerns prompt the retirement of the restaurant portion while the hotel and tavern continue.
On Veishea opening day in Ames three night shows presented the Veishea court in the armory with Doris Jean Detjen of Kansas City as Queen of Queen. In State Gymnasium fraternities sororities and dormitories performed Veishea Vodvil while Chan Chandler and his orchestra played for the first Memorial Union date.
A report suggests Dr A Loudon from The Netherlands was ordered to act as general pay master for Dutch diplomats abroad in emergencies. The rumor arose amid talk of a German blitzkrieg impacting Holland and circulated as part of wartime speculation.

Des Moines performer Albert Charles Ferguson known as Grand pa Jitters dies of cancer at 67. A comedy dancer on stage and radio, he last appeared March 23 on WHO Barn Dance Frolic at Shrine Auditorium, unable to finish his sand-soft shoe routine after an exhausting performance. He had been on the show for six years.
