County Attorney Richard S. Bordwell announces a new solo practice at 103% N. Marion Ave in Washington above the Coast to Coast store. He has practiced here four years with Baldrige Baldrige Boyd Bordwell and since January 1975 has served as county attorney.
United Press International reports a proposal to end the 38 day strike by San Francisco craft workers was approved today and a tentative Memphis Tennessee accord reached in a week old strike idling 5000 construction workers. The nationwide disruption continues at tire plants bus lines parcel services NBC studios and breweries as negotiators plan formal approval.
Republican candidate Jim Leach will host an informal meet and greet at the home of Lorna and Bob Shepherd on Tuesday May 11 from 7 to 9 am. Location is 412 miles north of Rex Smith corner off highway 92 east of Washington. Dads and their children are invited to a YMCA Lake Darling weekend campout May 22–23 with outdoor activities, cost $3 per family, registration by May 12, YMCA membership not required.
The Iowa Senate voted to remove the requirement that a rape victim prove active resistance. Senator Minnette Doderer proposed the amendment during criminal code revision debates, arguing forcible resistance can invite more violence and should not be forced on victims.
DES MOINES UPI The Iowa House approved by 88 votes to 5 a measure allowing school boards to dismiss teachers and nurses if a district superintendent brings charges. The bill calls for a private hearing by the board if a complaint is filed and does not cover principals or assistant principals. It now returns to the Senate.
Des Moines Iowa House Speaker Dale Cochran said a revision of Iowa's criminal law should win final approval before the end of the 1976 session. He noted the bill may go to a joint conference committee to resolve differences between versions as the House spent seven weeks debating it this session. The Senate was completing action on House amendments this week.
Dwight A. Guenther Jr. and Phil Adreon were held on 5000 bond each after being charged with manslaughter in the death of 19 year old Donald Mayner of Winthrop. The pair stopped to investigate Mayner’s pickup along a gravel road on the night of April 16.
In New Orleans a UPI report notes the federal government has collected nearly $1 million in fines this week linked to an ongoing corruption probe in the grain export industry. Two more exporting firms face charges, including Cook Industries, with multiple counts of falsifying records to cover cheating. Cornelius Heusel, an assistant U.S. attorney, says more indictments are expected as the probe continues.
In northeastern Italy a 6.9 magnitude quake devastates Friuli with Majano bearing heavy losses. Officials report 460 dead and over 1,000 injured as rescue teams continue. Government, U.S. Army, and Communist party join to lead relief with Red Cross and police.
Washington County farmers are urged to join a rural theft detection program created by the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the State Association of County Sheriffs and Deputies, and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. The plan marks farm equipment with coded IDs and provides confetti for grain, enabling rapid identification after recovery. Sheriff Yale Jarvis and Farm Bureau President Ed Augustine announced the program is ready in the county, urging farmers to register at the sheriff's office and purchase marking tools and confetti through the Farm Bureau. The system aims to deter theft, aid recoveries, and facilitate interstate law enforcement cooperation, though participation is essential for effectiveness.
The Washington Care Center will open a 50 bed expansion on May 9, bringing total capacity to 100. Open House during National Nursing Home Week from May 9 to 16 invites the public to tour the new facility and its private and semi private rooms. The center offers professional consulting services in nursing, dietary, dental, therapy, pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology. residents are physician-directed with pharmacist oversight plus full time activity director and beauty services. Administrator Evelyn Sanders says the goal is to help residents reach their highest functioning through varied activities and rehabilitative services.
The Labor Department reports April unemployment at 7.5 percent, a seven month stretch without rate change, while total employment rises 710,000 to a record 87.4 million. Adult men account for most of the gains, with women already surpassing pre-recession peaks. Long-term joblessness fell, but 30 percent of the unemployed remain jobless 15 weeks or more.
Carter denounced Maryland Democratic leaders supporting Edmund G Brown Jr in the May 18 Maryland primary. He said Brown backers would rather lose the election than let Carter win the party nomination. Carter trails Brown but expects to surge ahead, while Brown campaigns with Mandel and state leaders.
Dr C S Tam of Washington has been accepted for membership in the American Society of Internal Medicine. Dr John Pheiling, Iowa City cardiologist and president of the Society's Iowa district, said Tam will be presented as a member to ASIM's Iowa board in Ames later this year. Tam, who has practiced medicine in Washington since 1972, applied to the Society eight months ago.
The forecast calls for near freezing temperatures tonight with lows around 30 to 35 degrees. Saturday warms into the upper 60s, bringing milder conditions.
