Mayor G E Mace urges Washington residents to follow Section I of Ordinance 345 published May 5, defining nuisances in garbage handling. Prohibits placing trash in alleys, eavespouts leaking water on sidewalks, and leaving receptacles where flies or mosquitoes breed. violators face fines.
Dr. Walter R. Goetsch 38 dean of students at the University of Iowa died in a collision on Highway 6 between Iowa City and Coralville. His car hit a semi truck as drizzle fell. Two of his three children were in the car. Lydia Jean 10 suffered facial cuts, Richard escaped injury. Goetsch joined the university in 1944 and became dean in 1949.
Mrs. Mary DeFord of Columbus Junction died at 3 30 am Sunday after weeks of illness. Funeral plans are with Stephens funeral home. service details were not yet set. Born July 28 1864 to Christo pher and Mary Coyle, she married Will DeFord in 1884 and lived in Wapello six years during his sheriff tenure. he died in 1933. Survived by son Frank of Moline and several nieces and nephews.
Betty Teel and Bertha Ross spent the weekend in Northwood visiting friends and exploring the area with local acquaintances.
Police Chief Carl Hancher led a crackdown on traffic violators yielding eleven arrests. Offenders include John B Pooley speeding $12.50 Lyle Brinton speeding $5 Shirley E Gardner running a stop sign $1 Robert L Stewart defective lighting $1 Raymond G Spricher running a stop sign $1 Robert J Bowman parking in schoolyard $1 Gene Smith speeding $10 Leonard Marie intoxication 30 days jail James A Miller passing a school stop sign $2.50 Elwin J Miller speeding $10.
A Sunday two car collision on highway 1 near Walnut Hill, four miles from Brighton, injured two people. Leo Benda and Ed Stout drove the cars which collided near the hill’s top. Benda sustained a deep knee cut and Mrs. Benda reportedly suffered multiple broken ribs. Stout’s car and Benda’s were damaged, the latter severely. Deputy Loren D. Robertson investigated. no charges were filed.
President Truman and Bobby Cowell, a polio survivor from Queen City Missouri, shared the platform as Ottumwa welcomed the 66th birthday of the president during his cross country trip. About 31 000 people cheered with bands playing and trains whistling as the president spoke briefly on farm issues before departing to Creston.
S. W. Kaster and other Democrats traveled to Ottumwa to see President Truman. The crowd included the Iowa State College president and the WEISHER torch car. Truman lit the torch and started it toward Ames as Mayor Herschel Loveless introduced him. Jack More attended as Democratic state central committee chairman. A 13-coach diesel train brought about 35,000 people, one of Ottumwa’s largest crowds.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Buckwalter announce their purchase of the Shamrock Inn at Ainsworth from Les Woods. They return from Missouri where they operated a similar cafe and have added Bar B Que meats and sandwiches to the menu. Woods plans for the future are indefinite.
Earl F. Wisdom, Des Moines attorney and Republican candidate for the U S Senate in the June 5 primary, told an Iowa Republican Women luncheon that Iowa needs a non jittery senator in Washington. He warned against negative attitudes in Congress as a threat to freedom and national power and urged affirmative action on agriculture labor industry small business and civil liberties.
Washington dispatch notes GOP criticism of President Truman's west coast rail trip billed as a 250 thousand dollar cross country junket. The piece observes bipartisan use of special trains and questions who bears travel costs, noting no clear modern rule.
Fire Chief George Baker announced that a fire inspection has begun today in the Business Area fire zone. The check covers the square and blocks east west and south, plus two blocks north, to identify potential hazards.

Keota council, library trustees, and attorneys from Keota and Sigourney met to discuss constructing a public library funded by a bequest left by R. O. Wilson who died October 3. The grant is expected at 70 000 to 80 000 dollars and must be accepted within a year by council resolution. Plans include sites near Keota schools to serve students and teachers.
Washington high school vocal and instrumental musicians earned seven Division I ratings at the Perry state music contest held Saturday May 6. They also received five Division II ratings for soloists and small groups. Under directors Wendell Rider and Melvin Hill, performers included Mildred Stewart and Marilyn Mouser among others in vocal and brass, with Arlene Knupp, Dan Holland, Dan Brindley and Claire Davis noted for student conducting.
Southern Democrats opened a campaign to block President Truman's fair employment practices bill. Leaders Richard Russell or Lister Hill would lead the southern bloc in a week long fight to kill FEPC. A Senate vote to cut off debate was expected about ten days away under Senate Leader Scott Lucas.
Nashua New Hampshire reports Mayor Hugh Gregg, after election, directed police to remove the reserved for mayor curb sign and install a parking meter outside city hall, making his parking payment routine.
James R. Doheney of Great Barrington Massachusetts operates a laundry and an automobile driving school. He teaches two high school driver education classes and also works as an auctioneer. He serves as a deputy sheriff and substitutes occasionally as clerk of courts.
The Commercial Telegraphers union AFL says eight day strike against United Press centers on firing strikebreakers. UP rejects removal of eight supervisory telegraph department executives blamed for staying on the job. Union seeks $6.50 wage rise versus $2.21 offered and pay for time lost.
In Bonn five years after surrender the American British and French high commissions issue a new law aimed at preventing German rearmament. The measure, declared to maintain disarmament, places main responsibility on the western big three security board and coordinates six supporting regulations to keep German industry out of war production.
Wendell Rider, vocal music instructor in Washington high school, junior college and junior high, resigns to pursue doctoral studies in Iowa City. His replacement is hoped for soon as board and Superintendent M M Schell note his record of success in district and state contests and his community work. He will teach at University High School while studying for his PhD at the State University of Iowa.
Paris United States promises France economic and military aid to counter Soviet imperialism in Indo China. After nearly five hours, Dean Acheson and Robert Schuman said they concur on urgency and the need for remedial action to support French forces and the semi independent Indo-Chinese states.
The government expects to lose about 83 cents on the dollar disposing of more than 200 million dollars in butter cheese dried eggs and dried milk purchased under farm price support. CCC notes large portions will be given away for relief at home and abroad with total inventory losses around 170 million.
A marriage license was issued Saturday to Robert W. Frink of Ottumwa and Mary Anne Van Alst of Oskaloosa.
A few hundred people attended the National Music Week opening concert in Washington Sunday afternoon. Wendell Rider presented sacred music at the high school auditorium. The high school mixed chorus impressed the crowd and John Yousling served as guest organist. Upcoming events include the Municipal band in Central Park on Wednesday and the Little Six band festival Thursday at the high school.
Members are notified that first degree work moves to Tuesday night instead of Wednesday. Second degree work remains set for Friday night.
