Larry Foster, proprietor of Foster Radio and Television, marks ten years in Washington. He arrived from Biggsville, Illinois, on May 6, 1940, after operating a radio repair and appliance shop there for five years. The shop features the Capehart line of televisions and radios.
A Senate foreign relations subcommittee ordered Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and Theodore Green to conduct on the spot reviews of State Department loyalty and security programs abroad. They will depart for Europe with Frankfurt as a likely first stop to meet embassy security staff and join regional briefings at undisclosed sites.
Vic Crone owner of Crone's Traceries and Meats was hospitalized after a fall on the sidewalk near his business. He suffered a fractured ankle and was admitted to Washington County Hospital shortly after noon.
The Washington Softball association purchases lighting equipment from Greenfield. The sale contract was approved by the Washington Recreational council at a YMCA meeting on Friday. The group becomes financially independent, with Marion McAvoy present and Wayne Chamberlin presiding. O'Mahoney also supported the plan while GOP critics, led by Senate Leader Wherry, accused Truman of not understanding the small business problem.
Washington Dairy marks its eleventh anniversary under owner W M Tweeten who took over on May 1 1937 after purchasing from Rex Smith. The business features a modern building appearance updated equipment and a soda fountain plus Tweeten's Dairy Bar ice cream production.
Bob McFarlane of the McFarlane Insurance agency in Washington attended the 44th annual Iowa Association of Insurance Agents convention in Sioux City from Wednesday to Friday. Over 200 Iowa agents were present. Don Ross spoke, Don Reid served as master of ceremonies, and Tom Collins addressed the group after the Wednesday banquet.
General Douglas MacArthur told Australian reporters that Japan must decide itself on retaining bases in postwar Japan to defend against any future aggression. He expressed satisfaction with current Pacific bases and warned Allies could thwart attacks from Vladivostok or South China. He said Japan has not changed but would avoid starting another war, noting they understand disaster awaits them.
Cora Reighard owner of Cora's Cafe in Rubio was fined two hundred dollars in district court after a raid by Sheriff Charles Snyder and Deputy Loren Robertson. Officers seized a slot machine and two money jars during the Thursday night raid.
Des Moines Iowa shows clear and mild conditions with a high near 60 to 72. Tonight will be fair and cool with lows around 35 to 43. Sunday brings partly cloudy skies with highs near 60 to 74 and winds easing from 30 to 40 mph to 15 to 20 mph by Sunday night.
Iowa farmers across Washington County faced extensive losses from Friday winds that felled trees and damaged buildings. Repairs continued as Iowa Southern Utilities and Iowa Continental Telephone crews restored service to rural areas, with notable damage near Ainsworth, Brighton, and Pleasant Plain. A two story barn collapsed at L. G. Roberts farm, and a Pleasant Plain school roof crash endangered a noon bus, prompting facility offers from Brighton. A Piper Cub hangar was blown from Riverside, while Leo Brophy sustained serious injuries from a barn door incident. Electric service was restored to most by nightfall.

Brown urged residents to stock up on stamps for weekends to prevent delays. The move aims to save man hours while one daily delivery saves eight hours, with four carriers serving five city routes.

The witness list includes several others not named by the committee. Remington’s ties to Bentley were cited after her 1948 charges that he fed her secret data to wartime Russian spy networks.
