Police recovered a car stolen from a Washington parking area. The vehicle owned by Nick Redlinger was reported missing at 6 45 p m Monday and found parked along a highway six miles east of Columbus Junction at 3 a m today. The thief had locked the doors before leaving the car.
Dean Ray Richards of Wayland was hospitalized with minor injuries after a single vehicle crash on county road W61 about three miles south of Riverside. His 1974 car was demolished after it left the road and rolled onto its top. Charges of driving with a suspended license are pending.
Iowa troopers issued 3,489 speeding tickets over ten days from April 26 to May 5. Drivers received 2,764 car tickets and 725 for trucks, with 3,102 car warnings and 732 truck warnings. Public safety official Robert Holetz said the totals are well over double those from a year earlier.
Periods of showers and thundershowers are likely through Wednesday. Temperatures will reach the low to mid 60s this afternoon with overnight lows in the low 50s. Wednesday highs expected in the mid 60s. Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph. Measurable precipitation probabilities are 60 percent this afternoon, 70 percent tonight, and 70 percent Wednesday.
The Jonathan Clark Conger Corporation voted at the annual meeting to install a Colonial farm kitchen and weaving room as part of its Bicentennial project. The Indian Council Room will house the McCall-Royster Indian collections and become a premier southeast Iowa exhibit. The house opens Sundays from 2 to 5 pm all summer with adult $1 and children 50 cents admissions.
The Mid-Prairie Board of Education, after a seaside protest by about 70 parents led by Tom Jirsa, set the 1974-75 term to begin Aug 28 and end May 30. Officials had proposed Aug 22 but shifted to a compromise across districts. The plan allows vacation adjustments and calls for a citizens dates committee, with Peter J. Spoden hired to fill high school PE vacancies and coach teams.
Haydn Thomas, longtime Crawfordsville farmer active in local civic and school board work, announces his candidacy for a four year term on the Washington County board of supervisors as a Republican in the June primary. He plans to contribute to future governance and says he has no axe to grind. Thomas has farming roots dating to 1937 and was raised in Cotter.
Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott said the first 800 pages of edited Watergate transcripts show a shabby, disgusting performance with insufficient moral indignation from participants. He noted the President urged others to get the story out and called the material released by the White House very confused.
Washington Public Library announces its annual art show for junior high age artists and older from Washington and surrounding counties. The exhibition runs May 28 through June 3 in the Helen Wilson Gallery. Up to three works per artist may be entered, with May 24 as the deadline for submission.
City Council received a plan from the Plan and Zoning Commission to study annexation of about 200 acres between the east city limits and the airport road extending to East 11th Street. The area includes commercial property and farmland with substantial assessed value. Council members urged careful study of service costs and bonding limits before action.
John Elliott of Washington named as Washington County coordinator for the Bill Gannon for Governor campaign. Elliott, a former Democratic County Chairperson and National Guard member, and his wife Rosemary have lived in the county 14 years. Gannon says Elliott will help build an organization and an open campaign attracting voters across Iowa. Interested individuals can contact Elliott to get involved.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko at the Archbishop Makarios palace in Nicosia to discuss American efforts to disengage Syria and Israel. They planned to brief Damascus on a revised Israeli proposal while coordinating with Moscow on arms talks.
City Attorney John Owen told the Washington City Council the city cannot hold a special election or a referendum on Blair House fate or spend tax funds or issue bonds for its renovation before Iowa home rule takes effect in 1975. An informal poll is possible. demolition or retention remains undecided. The opinion excludes use of liquor profits or federal revenue sharing for Blair House.
