Floyd Moffitt a Sidney farmer recovered a missing check and three ten dollar bills four years after thinking they were stolen. He found the items in his implement shed confirming their loss was not permanent.
Bellevue reports Capt. Walter bh. Hunter, pilot of the Streckfus excursion steamer Capitol, has left for St. Louis marking 66 years of service on the Mississippi. He earned his pilot license at 21 and led the last raft of logs down the river in the Ottumway Belle before joining the Capitol crew in 1916.
Ottumwa reports O. B. Welch 60 a service station proprietor and Mrs. Northrup found their Lancaster marriage on April 18 not legally valid after a divorce decree technicality surfaced during settlement of Northrup’s divorce. Welch filed for annulment.
George Pfister on his farm near Elgin shows a parsnip measuring 46 inches from crown to tip. Some root was broken off while digging the vegetable from the garden.
Mrs Charles Kurth of Humboldt, sister of the late Frank Gotech once world heavyweight wrestling champion, owns a clock 236 years old that still keeps excellent time.
A double funeral was held for Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bloomfield ages 78 and 65 in Centerville on Monday. Mrs Bloomfield died Thursday and her husband Friday nine years after a double funeral for their two sons Levi and Claude.
James Norman Hall, famed for Tahiti and the Bounty chronicles, visits his former Colfax home as a guest of his mother Mrs. Ella Hall. His wife and two children stopped in California. He has erected a home on the island and plans permanent residence there.
Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma presided a brief district court session in Washington as part of the March term. Petit jurors for the term are to report Monday, May 11 at two o clock for resumed jury trials after a month’s halt while the judge sat in another county.
J. W. Bottcher of Charles City has bought the local Coast to Coast store from William Tracy and assumed charge. Bottcher, who has spent the past year in Ventura California, moved with Mrs. Bottcher into the H. M. Shellabarger residence at 116 West Third Street. Tracy intends to move to Colorado Springs for his health, with Milton Tracy remaining as clerk.
In Madrid a new film studio complex representing a multi million peseta investment has opened. The studios are owned and managed by Serafin Bailesteros, expanding local film production facilities.
The Iowa Supreme Court wiped out more than 30 indictments from a Woodbury county graft grand jury. Walter Maley and 30 others were cleared as charges were invalidated and a related gambling conspiracy trial ended with a directed verdict for the attorney general. The ruling cites disqualifications tied to special prosecutors.
At yesterday’s meeting the council approved two ordinances. One sets park commissioner qualification, board organization, and salaries at five dollars yearly. The other raises city official salaries: city clerk 125 dollars monthly, city marshal 106, night marshal 100, fire truck drivers 97.50, street commissioner 100, cemetery sexton 77.50, plus expanded marshal and driver duties.
Fitzgerald Hall, president of the Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad, argues that the only benefit of streamlining trains is advertising value. He comments from Louisville, Kentucky, via United Press.
The Journal Cooking School led by Miss Jan Shaw opened to about 400 Washington county housewives yesterday at the State theater. Demonstrations featured stuffed flank steak and other recipes with prizes awarded to about fifty attendees. The final session is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
Washington county voters will find on June ballots a list of township candidates including trustee clerk and assessor. The notice shows names from nomination papers, though some townships lack full slates. Voters may write in preferred candidates. additional names were added for Republican and Democratic committees.
Funeral services for William Huebsam are set for 9 36 Wednesday morning at St James Cathode entired with pastor Henry Corcoran in charge. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery. Huebsam died early yesterday at the county hospital.
County welfare worker Miss Jane Ludy announced an extended enrollment period for CCC camps from May 4 to May 15. Applicants must be 17 to 28 years old and belong to a family that is a member of a re net family.
A Saturday story omitted a line naming committeeman Mrs Louise and misidentified Lloyd Foster as Lloyd Easter. It clarifies Harry Dye as Democratic committeeman for the second ward and Mrs Louise Fitzwilliaman as committeewoman and notes the correct Lloyd Foster in Jackson township nomination.
In the Red Sea an Arab boat was sunk after a meet with a giant swordfish. The creature, rarely seen but feared, is reported to weigh about 200 to 300 pounds.
In Holyoke Massachusetts Richard Shea promised $100 to William Durthey about 60 years ago. The men drifted apart and Shea stopped hearing from Durthey. Recently Shea received $100 from Durthey, settling the old debt.
Mrs. J. A. Harwood of 315 West Washington street was a charter member of three Washington organizations. She helped found the D. A. R. Fortnightly club and the Home Missionary society of the Methodist church.
Milo Reno 70 a flamboyant Iowa farm orator and former national president of the Farm Holiday association died in Excelsior Springs Missouri after a seven week illness. He sparked nationwide farm strikes in 1931 and 1933 urging cost of production plus profit and led a militant wing that pressured state legislatures to pass mortgage moratorium laws. Reno clashed with Washington and New Deal policies, and his movement faded as program relief arrived.
Six contestants survived the second preliminary of the Amateur Night series promoted by the Ys Men's club. Results announced last night at the sare show a close vote with six advancing to the finals set for May 14 at the State theater. one more preliminary is planned for Thursday. The survivors include Robert Adams, Don Boyer, Hughes and Pearson, Yvonne Sin Gael, and others in studio, novelty, and vocal groups.
Washington will observe Memorial Day with Supt Bb. A. Ralston and Dr. B. K. Schwartz as speakers. Ralston will address Woodlawn cemetery and Schwartz Elm Grove, announced by Dale Atkinson, the general chairman. A parade forms at 10 a.m. on the square, then moves to the two cemeteries for services and programs.
Italian troops and motor columns enter Addis Ababa signaling the end of an eight month Ethiopian campaign with 250000 casualties. News confirms the flag raised over the capital and Mussolini’s jubilation follows as Rome erupts in celebration. Sir Sidney Barton had earlier relayed the breakthrough to London.
Edward W. Beattie sketches Addis Ababa as a sprawling mud capital with neglected streets, unlit lights, a crumbling palace, and a partially paved Main Street lined with Greek and Armenian shops. He notes pestilence, beggars, and decay despite a modern railway station and a handful of theatres and cafes.
