A historic courthouse clock in Manchester, Iowa, stopped for a few hours after a recent storm when a lightning strike damaged its mechanism. The clock had not been out of service since a janitor’s mishap forty years ago.
Charles City-James Scofield, a high school student, suffered a fractured skull in an auto accident near Nora Springs. He learned of injuries after X rays five days later. Scofield’s car, driven by Donald Troy, left the pavement and rolled four times. he is being treated at the hospital.
Council Bluffs resident Homer Whistler, a city council member, has one of the region's finest arrow head collections. While yard work Saturday, his rake struck a stone that turned out to be a fine arrow head, surprising him as he searched far afield for relics.
Ames Andrew Gates of Joliet and Ames Iowa City was arrested after police checked a Delta Tau Delta fraternity house. He claimed parole from a Pennsylvania state penitentiary. Officials noted several fraternity house footings in the area.
Iowa State Teachers college officials announce two new buildings to replace the current laundry and a greenhouse. Construction begins in June on a project totaling about 660000 dollars to be erected this summer on campus.
An antique electric automobile in Waterloo escaped its restraint and crashed through a garage door, then struck a parked car in the alley. Owner Mrs. H. H. Hatina sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Memory of Prohibition lingers for Jack Thomas 38 of Spring Valley Minnesota. Thomas was among 10 men indicted by a federal grand jury in 1929 for alleged conspiracy to violate liquor laws. He was arrested a month ago and arraigned in Dubuque on five counts and began a four month sentence in Black Hawk county jail.
Manchester Freeman Harris an Colesburg farmer believes goat milk offers profit. He bought one acre in Colesburg and ten goats and claims production cost can be as low as one cent per quart.
The Most Rev. Gerald T. Bergan bishop of Des Moines will celebrate the pontifical heir mass marking the opening of the state convention of the Knights of Columbus in Des Moines on May 25. The Most Rev. Henry P. Rohmann bishop of Davenport will preside in the sanctuary.

Washington area students from high school and junior college perform a musical program Tuesday evening at 7 45 in the high school auditorium as part of local music week. The program features the mixed chorus under Misa Coffey and various instrumental numbers plus vocal pieces and a piano recital tonight by Mrs E Chase.
Robert Risk was taken to the county hospital after a head on collision with a car driven by Bob Johnston of Airfield on primary road No 1 one mile west of Brighton. Johnston was treated at home in Fairfield for a head cut. Ernie Norton, a passenger, escaped injury. The crash occurred about 12 15 this morning.
Estherville and nearby towns face intensified tornado damage. Governor Herring sends 200 CCC workers from Bancrest and 150 to Milford, designating Estherville as headquarters. Damages may approach one million dollars as more injuries and losses emerge.
William Ruebsam aged 75 died at 2 30 this morning at Washington county hospital after a period of ill health. He lived at 409 West Madison and will be buried in Elm Grove cemetery after funeral services at St James Catholic Church Wednesday at nine. Survived by wife Adelheid four daughters and a brother and sister. He was a lifelong Republican and active in local public affairs.
Five Canadian search participants who aided in locating a Polish balloon during the 1933 Gordon Bennett race in Northern Quebec were decorated by the Polish government in Ottawa.
The Washington Y M C A holds its annual meeting Tuesday evening with Rev. D K B Zimmerman of United Presbyterian Crawfordsville speaking on Youths Strategic Places. A 6 30 dinner precedes the session with 85 tickets sold, dinner 40 cents, reservations at 23. Five board members will be elected, reports distributed, meeting to end by eight.
The second Amateur Night preliminary at the Y M C A starts at 7 30 p m with ten acts five studio and five novelty groups competing to reach the finals and share 80 dollars in prize money. Dick McCleery hosts as acts include Velda Parcell Violet and Hazel Lambert and more.
Indian Broom finished third in the Kentucky Derby with jockey George Burns, formerly known as Dick Burne when a boy in Washington. Burns, son of Roy Paddy Burns, and his brother are noted jockeys from the Burns family now active on the Pacific coast. They are nephews of Mrs. George Genkinger of Washington.
Washington May 4 Senator Bone Democrat of Washington urged a senate inquiry to end what he called an odious form of oppression by unnamed federal spies. He said congress members faced possible coercion and espionage pressure on their votes but named no individuals.

Trapped in a burning Seattle farmhouse a nine year old boy, a seven year old boy, and a 21 year old woman caring for them died as neighbors watched unable to help. The victims were Eddie Coulon, Donnie Coulon, and Mrs Madeline Clennon. The fire's cause was not disclosed.

Paul Campbell trombone solo Billy Cox marimba solo and the marching band all received good ratings. The marching band contest was Saturday afternoon.
