Kissinger Says Israel Syria Close on Golan Troop Withdrawal
A high American official said after seven hours of talks with Syrian President Hafez Assad that Israel and Syria are in negotiating range on troop disengagement in the Golan Heights with one sticking point how far Israel would withdraw. He noted reasonable progress on issues other than the ceasefire line and expected an exchange of war prisoners as part of any disengagement, with potential restraint in fighting even without a ceasefire. Kissinger and Assad discussed the talks during a flight from Damascus to Alexandria, where Egyptian President Anwar Sadat awaited them.

Three perish in New Jersey blaze
