Mrs. William Fuchs, 40, died from first and second degree burns after pouring kerosene into a heating stove on Monday morning. Services were held Tuesday afternoon. The Fuchs home was destroyed and she is survived by her husband and two daughters. Neighbors described flames two to five feet high as she fled and rolled on the ground.
Des Moines Iowa House Speaker Harold Felton named the first two members of a five man committee to survey mental hospitals and care of the insane. Rep John Gardner Lisbon and Rep John R Heffner Webster City named to the panel with two senators to be appointed by Lt Gov Kenneth Evans and one governor appointee to join later.
Hudson voters on Tuesday approved 134 to 22 a $100,000 bond issue for postwar school building. Superintendent R. L. Burenh said bonds are issued now due to favorable rates to start repayment during good times.
Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal named 25 additional colleges and universities to establish naval reserve officer training corps units. Courses start on or about November 1. Iowa State College at Ames was among the institutions selected.
Annan Schaefer of Melcher area was arraigned Tuesday on larceny of domestic fowls after dozens of stolen chicks were identified by clipped claws from the Mock and Gluss hatchery. She was released on $500 bond pending the hearing.
Three Town Legislature members resign to accept state roles. Senator Frank D. Martin becomes field auditor for the motor vehicle registration division. Representative James E. Cowan becomes manager of the state liquor store at What Cheer. Representative Henry W. Wormley becomes special assistant attorney general for the state tax commission. Two other legislators resigned last month.
A convention of county school superintendents from 25 counties in southeastern Iowa, scheduled for Friday May 4 in Washington, is postponed with May 25 as the tentative rescheduled date subject to change. The meeting is called by the county officials.

German armies in northern Italy and western Austria surrendered to the Allies effective at 7 a m local time. President Truman said the Italy capitulation is part of a wider European victory and urged Japan to recognize the meaning of these events. Grew said the move reduces resistance and clears the way toward invasion of Austria and southern Germany.
Franklin Stagner pleaded guilty to not yielding half the highway and was fined 25 dollars plus costs after a two car collision seven miles north of Washington near the Frank Kiora corner. Automobiles driven by Joe Christner and Franklin Stagner sustained about 250 dollars in damage. Drea Christner suffered minor bruising. Sheriff Putnam said charges would be filed against Stagner for cutting the corner.

Chairman G B F Mace lists township leaders for the seventh war loan campaign starting May 14. Each chairperson will form committees to set local quotas and recruit residents to buy war bonds. County sales total 124 566 50 with B Bonds at 657 845 75 and other series making up the rest.
County Superintendent Lester P. Krabill announced that the rural school eighth grade class set to graduate this year in the county will number about one hundred students.

George Haney aged 68, brother of Frank Haney of Washington, died at his Fort Madison home after a six to eight month illness. Funeral services are set for 10 30 Friday morning at a local funeral home with burial in the family plot. He was born in Keosauqua, son of Aaron Harey, and had lived in Fort Madison many years. Surviving are his wife and three daughters all of Fort Madison, four brothers Frank Oscar of Plymouth J Charles of Keosauqua and Will of Milton, with five sisters deceased.
About 100 boys and girls have papers being graded for high marks. Mr Krabill said commencement exercises are planned for May 29, but the program and other arrangements are not yet finished.
London reports the Red army captured Rostock and moved within 3 miles of allied forces as Berlin siege nears end. British 2nd Army reaches the Baltic at Wismar, isolating Hamburg and Kiel. German forces in Berlin show signs of disintegration as Soviet and Allied advances continue.
Isaac Freeland died this afternoon at his brother John Freeland’s home in Ainsworth at age 81. Born July 16, 1863, in Louisa county, he spent most of his life in Washington county. The body was moved to L A Jones funeral home where arrangements were not yet settled.
Allied forces tighten around Austria as the 6th and Fifth armies push within 385 miles and 35 miles of frontiers. Trieste is cleared, an enemy convoy surrenders, and Tito’s forces link with British troops while Gen. Clark plans a northward Alpine push. Winter gear and mules are issued for mountain operations.
Nancy Lackey Shaffer widow of John Shaffer died in Crawfordsville at age 66 from injuries after a fall. Born March 16 1855 in Erie Tennessee she lived in Washington County for decades. Survived by three sons J F Shaffer R R Shaffer and Lee Shaffer and two grandsons. Burial followed at Crawfordsville cemetery after services at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. Frederick Westbrook.
Two junior high pupils sustained injuries in local auto accidents this afternoon. Phil Crossett suffered a nose injury rib bruising and a cut lip when struck by a car on the east side of the square. Bill Lloyd jumped from a car before it stopped near the high school and received a concussion with a head wound. Both were taken to a doctor’s office for treatment.
President Truman ordered the end of the Office of Civilian Defense by June 34 and withdrew a $396,008 budget request for the next fiscal year. He stressed the ongoing need for volunteer work in states and communities.
