Paul Shaw head of Shaw Aircraft Co reports theft of a partly dismantled de jure Taylorcraft airplane valued at 7.00. The red and black fuselage with license NCS6033 was hauled from the airport by a large truck after an April windstorm damaged the craft.
Paul Applegate, once sheriff of Marion County, lies in serious condition at Collins Memorial hospital after a beating last Thursday. Dr. R V Mater reports a brain concussion multiple fractured ribs and a cut jaw. Applegate was attacked in a blacksmith shop during an errand for a friend. Sheriff Jim Van Hemert declined to comment saying no charges filed and no investigation is in progress.
Iowa leads among states in veteran education with 54.4 percent of service men having at least four years of high school. Utah tops at 60.3 percent. Among Iowans age 26 and older, 61.2 percent are high school graduates, while 57.5 percent of those under 26 completed four years.
Mrs Irenry Melimen 50 died at Cedar Valley hospital after burns from a kerosene fire at her north Charles City home on June 17. Services set for Saturday afternoon. She leaves her husband six sons and two daughters.
A total of 166 navy men will receive ROTC training at Town State College under a new navy approved program starting July 1, replacing the V-12 scheme. The switch to the new plan fully takes effect by March 1, with Dean T R Age stating the curriculum will emphasize naval science and reduce civilian subjects.
Dale Laton 32 will be charged today with driving while intoxicated in the death of his wife Opal who died after falling from the automobile he drove. Deputy Stebbins says the filing could send the case to the May term grand jury where manslaughter may be explored. He noted Laton did not necessarily push his wife but reckless driving may have contributed.
Milford and Burke McCreedy sponsored a fox hunt on Milford McCreedy’s farm north of Haskins. Seven cubs were captured but the mother eluded hunters. Milford McCreedy observed the event yesterday.
Allied troops storm Rangoon the capital of Burma in a final phase of the campaign to free the British colony from Japan. A paratroop landing 20 miles south completed the encirclement while Japanese officers and puppet authorities reportedly fled the city. Australian forces push toward Borneo oil and rubber targets on Carakan as MacArthur confirms gains.
President Truman vetoed a bill seeking to defer large numbers of agricultural workers, arguing the move would be unjust to those already inducted or about to be. He called the measure a first step toward special privilege for agriculture and a departure from the selective service principles.
New Zealand forces advanced to occupy Trieste on the Adriatic coast as peace settled over much of Italy. Tito claimed Yugoslav control of Trieste yesterday while Allied and German surrender details were being finalized.
On Tuesday afternoon a fox hunt was staged with Burke's dog guiding the way. The den, an old groundhog hole, contained mice chicken feathers rabbit fur and more. Men dug with spades to reach the foxes as the young animals fought back and were restrained.
Clarice Meek of the Washington Journal staff earned first place as Conductor of a woman's department in a Wa Press Women contest held last week in Des Moines. Awards covered news and advertising across dailies weeklies magazines and radio with Judith MacNulty of Mt Pleasant News taking first in advertising promotion.
Funeral services for Isaac Freeland of Ainsworth, who died yesterday, are set for Friday at four in the graveside at Ainsworth cemetery led by Rev. O. J. Fix. If rain, services move to Ainsworth Methodist church. He died at his brother John Preeland’s home after years of illness. He was born in Louisa county and lived on a farm northeast of Ainsworth. Surviving are his brother John and sister Mrs. Nettie Marston of Ainsworth.
The McCreedy family estimates the delay to be six to eight weeks, noting an anticipated wait period for the situation.
Memorial day plans in Washington were set with T. L. Brookhart as general chair. A 9 45 park program precedes a 10 30 cemetery parade with no talks, coordinated by Legion VFW and Auxiliary groups and local schools. Don Klene may deliver the park oration, else and other details to be finalized.
Ralph V C Beaver of Excelsior Springs Missouri has been elected by the Washington Federal Savings and Loan association board as secretary to succeed the late C R McCutchen. He will oversee the office on North Marion avenue starting in June with Mrs Marguerie Swift remaining. Bauer a son of the late Chris Bauer has loan experience and is a field man for Mutual Benefit Life Insurance of Newark New Jersey.
London reports that Hamburg, Germanys major port, has been declared open and will be entered by British troops at noon. A prior station broadcast suggesting occupation was unclear and may have been misheard. The British entry is to start with a curfew at 1 p m for all except utility workers, with Hamburg police enforcing orders.
The Washington high school senior class presents Pride and Prejudice in the auditorium tonight at eight with a two night run. Bernice Quintus directs the unusual period costumes and Quaint attire as nearly 20 actors take the stage. Frances Whisler wears her grandmother’s wedding dress for the role of a lifetime in this small town high school production.
In San Francisco on May 3 news from UPI says the big three have broken the deadlock in Polish negotiations, raising hope for settlement of a key UN conference issue. Poland again becomes a live issue as a new Soviet proposal moves talks forward, though no final agreement is reached and snags could arise.
London May 3 reports the Eighth Air Force may be moved from Germany after strategic bombing. Details are secret but it is believed bombers will join B-29s in the campaign against Japan. Crewmen have returned home or are en route and some may join Super Fortress command.
London reports strong belief that Germany may capitulate soon as Allied forces advance. Speer broadcasts in the name of the German government denying arms surrender, while Churchill’s absence fuels talk of a near end to the war.
