Iowa Senate moves to debate divorce code revision

DES MOINES UPI The Senate was set to begin debate on a revised Iowa Criminal Code as lawmakers approved by a 37 0 vote a measure to require conciliation efforts before divorce petitions. The bill would require a statement on whether reconciliation could save the marriage.

Iowa House State Government Chairman William Monroe orders a May 11 public hearing at 8 p.m. in the House chamber to review six areas of the State Fair Board. Des Moines man charged with first degree murder

Jeffrey Robert Calvert age 22 of Des Moines has been charged with first degree murder in the strangling death of 18 year old Mary Ann Scovel whose body was found two weeks ago in her apartment. Calvert was arrested Friday and arraigned in Magistrate's Associate District Court with bond set at 75000. Scovel was found by her boyfriend Terry Lee Lively 26 who lived nearby.

Plan return to one room schoolhouse bicentennial project

Lincoln Elementary School in Washington will send 218 students in grades kindergarten through 6 to Walnut Country School for May 3–7 half day sessions to experience life in a one room rural school. Groups of 21 will attend mornings 9 to 11:30 and afternoons 11:30 to 3, with lunch carried in a sack. Ten teachers will accompany groups. a child from each family is sought. Participants include named teachers and district staff, reflecting an emphasis on heritage and hands on learning.

Ford and Reagan clash as Texas primary looms

Dunton criticizes Ray veto on farm tax relief plan

Iowa State Rep. Keith Dunton voiced strong disapproval Friday of Gov. Robert Ray’s partial veto of a three year property tax relief bill. Dunton urged immediate use of the farm land productivity provision and argued against further study of the tax system. He noted the bill’s veto delays legislative fixes and warned that next year’s session will reopen the issue. In a separate vote, Dunton opposed a workman’s compensation bill lowering the minimum hired labor threshold, saying it risks gaps for small farmers and summer youth workers.

Festival of Arts at Washington Junior High Set for May 4

Washington Junior High presents A Festival of Arts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday May 4 in the school building.
