Balloon crash in Carlisle lights lines injures none

In Carlisle Warren County three people escaped injury when a hot air balloon struck 250000 volt power lines near Carlisle High School field Thursday night. Officials shut off power to about 500 homes while wreckage was cleared. pilot Dennis Cattell said he did not see the lines.

Ray Sets Nov 2 for Special House Election in Des Moines

Gov. Robert D. Ray scheduled November 2 for a special election in Des Moines to fill the unexpired term of Rep. imes T. Caffrey who died last weekend. Voters in the 67th House District would choose someone to finish Caffrey's term ending, and another to begin a full two-year term in 1977.

4 H identification must be done through the Washington County Extension Service for all 4 H livestock projects including swine rabbits dogs cats horses chickens and ponies. Handwriting expert backs Hughes will as genuine

Charles Hamilton, a renowned autograph expert, says the handwritten Hughes will appears genuine after inspecting a photocopy. He notes the signature closely matches Hughes, and cites features that would be hard to forge. The document, released by Mormon Church officials, directs the Hughes fortune to the Hughes Institute in Miami, several universities, and Hughes relatives and aides.

United Parcel strike set for midnight across 13 states

United Parcel Service drivers across 13 western and midwestern states plan a strike at midnight. UPS officials report halted pickups and no over the counter shipments as Teamsters leaders disclose the plan in Grand Rapids, Michigan. States affected include Colorado Iowa Kansas Ohio Kentucky Michigan Minnesota Missouri Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota Wisconsin and Wyoming.

County home rule advances in Iowa House action

In Des Moines UPI reports the House approved 826 joint resolution for a constitutional amendment to grant counties home rule powers similar to cities. The measure, already passed Senate 29-14 February 26, would require identical approval next year before a general ballot. Advocates say it could ease legislative workload, while opponents warn against uniform county structures across diverse areas.

Washington High elects Sheryl Miller as Student Council president

Sheryl Miller, a 16 year old junior, was elected Washington High School Student Council president for 1976 77. Other SALT members elected include Margaret Butler as vice president Gregg Horn treasurer and Tina Libe secretary. Progressive slate led by Debbie Vanderlinden trailed. The event followed a Law Day program with Mid Prairie and Washington students participating in simulated court proceedings.
