Washington High Band Wins Division I At State Contest
The Washington High School Concert Band directed by Robert Shepherd earned a Division I rating in Class A at the Iowa High School Music Association state large group contest in Mt. Pleasant. They played Golden Jubilee March by Sousa and To Be Fed By Ravens by W Francis McBeth. Their Spring Concert is set for Tuesday May 18 at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium titled American Music for Winds and Percussion A Bicentennial Tribute to American Creativity.

Record low temperatures hit Iowa towns under cold front
A Canadian cold front pushed frigid air into Iowa early today with southerly winds bringing much warmer air from the west along, but new records were set in Burlington Lamoni and Sioux City. Burlington fell to 29 breaking 32 from 1954 Lamoni also 29 besting 30 in 1921 and Sioux City statewide low 25 beating 30 from 1921 Ottumwa tied 32 with the 1935 low.

Newton man shoots wife then takes own life
Jasper County Medical Examiner Dr. Fred Carpenter Jr said tests show Walter Woodrow, 56, shot his wife Jane, 53, and then killed himself in their Newton home. Powder burns on hands and other evidence led to the murder suicide theory. the bodies were found by Woodrow’s mother early Sunday. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation will continue tests to confirm nitrate on Woodrow’s hands. Mrs Woodrow died at a Des Moines hospital after being taken there.

Elementary Bands in Concert Thursday at Washington School
Washington School bands under directors Fred Stark and Robert Shaw will present their annual spring concert Thursday at 7 30 p m in the junior high gym. The beginners band performs Chapel Chimes Beautiful Spring Streets of Laredo Krazy Klock and Safari. The elementary jazz band plays Sues Blues Reuben and Rachel Swing and Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho. The sixth grade band features One Tin Soldier Coral Rock and Its a Small World with solos by Jeanie Linge Eric Good and Kirk Dunbar. Lions Club presents Most Improved awards to one student from each attendance center.

Public hearing on elder services in Washington county May 10
Heritage Agency on Aging will host a public hearing Monday May 10 at 1 30 p m in the McCleery room of the YMCA YWCA Washington to gather ideas on expanding services for the elderly. The agency based at Kirkwood Community College plans budget for the year starting October and notes it already offers free legal help information and referral services and congregate meals with a new limited dental care program recently announced. Officials will decide whether to expand keep or drop services based on testimony.

Pianist-humorist Mario Braggiotti closed the Washington Concert Association season with a light program that mixed humor and serious piano works. He impressed with authority in Beethoven Moonlight Sonata Debussy Clair de Lune Chopin Polonaise in A flat and Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue while adding novelty including a Scarlatti to Gershwin styles impersonation.
