Washington recorded .68 inch of rain in the previous 24 hours ending at 7 am. The official observer logged the reading as farmers and city residents await sunshine. With field work stalled, planting plans may shift if dry weather does not arrive soon.
City police report multiple vandalism incidents Saturday night into Sunday morning. A rock shattered a plate glass window at Farmers Store ceramics shop 210 North Marion Ave. Car windows belonging to William Little and Officer Jerry Beauchamp were damaged and radio antennas torn off.
The Health Planning Council of North Central Iowa will host 35 to 40 osteopathic medicine students and their families from Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine in seven counties May 6-7. Hosts will show them health care, recreation, and local business and cultural activities in Calhoun, Hamilton, Humboldt, Kossuth, Pocahontas, Webster, and Wright counties.

President Nixon told 200 Texas guests at the Connally ranch that US bombing and naval pressure must continue until North Vietnam ends its offensive. He warned South Vietnam would fall if the air and sea support stops, while blasting war critics and signaling possible energy and tax position shifts.

A Washington High School concert band facing a dangerous trip home from its spring tour endured a burst tire on a chartered bus near York Nebraska causing air brake failure. The driver recovered control and stopped the vehicle as the group split among the other two buses and later reunited after repairs.
Sue Eagle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clem Eagle of Washington, won first place in the Iowa DECA state display contest in Des Moines. She will travel to Los Angeles for the national leadership conference, staying at the Biltmore Hotel with sister Mary Eagle and DECA advisor Jay Whannel. The winning display, a 5 by 3 foot shadow box, advanced from a finals group of six with a high written display test score. Events in LA include Disneyland Universal Studios Queen Mary and Living Museum of the Sea.
Severe weather struck the central United States with heavy rain and strong winds causing property damage in Abilene Hoisington and areas around Kansas City. Roof tops trailers and trees were toppled and scattered showers were reported from the Plains to the Great Lakes region with stockmen warned from Wyoming to the Dakotas.
