Crane Company's Washington plant resumes normal operations after a five day shutdown caused by slack work. Non probationary employees with 50 days on the job are recalled while 27 probationary workers are not. Footings for a new city water tower will begin once ground dries, with steel due around the 22nd.
A Perry woman, Mrs Jo Ann Becker, 25, died Monday night in a two car collision on Iowa Highway 141 about 11 miles west of Perry. The wreck occurred when her car was struck broadside by a vehicle driven by Barbara Huitt, 18, of Perry. Becker died instantly at the scene.
North Vietnamese troops and tanks moved toward the Nancy artillery base near Hue, with part of the base reportedly under enemy control by nightfall. U.S. reports say Hue is a major objective while fighting intensifies from An Loc to Kontum, with heavy air strikes and renewed casualties in Quang Tri and Qui Nhon.
United Press International reports cloudy northeast and clearing southwest tonight with diminishing winds. Lows range from the upper 30s in the northwest to the mid 40s in the south. Partly cloudy and warmer Wednesday with highs in the 60s.
J Edgar Hoover founder of the FBI died in his sleep at age 77. Acting Attorney General Kleindienst announced natural causes and said funeral plans were not yet set. President Nixon ordered flags at half staff and hailed Hoover as a legend in his lifetime.
Washington High School seniors sat in a county courtroom as attorneys selected a 12 member jury for Hartzler and Duwa vs Town of Kalona. The event tied to Law Day and offered students a glimpse of district court and juror duties.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful state Sen. John Tapscott visited Des Moines to outline tax reform aims and a shift from material to people oriented legislation. He urged higher property tax relief for farmers and rural services while criticizing the current tax structure as inequitable and pledged to veto any tax measure not based on ability to pay.
Theta Lambda chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will host a benefit auction May 9 at 6 30 p m at the county fairgrounds to raise funds for the Washington Community High School Jazz Band's trip to the International Jazz Festival in Montreux Switzerland in June. Proceeds fund the trip and residents are urged to donate items such as furniture dishes baked goods and other saleables with donations arranged for pickup or dropped at the fairgrounds.
City officials urge Washington residents cleaning yards for Spring not to burn grass or trash on blacktop streets. Heat from fires damages street surfaces and gutters. Debris should be burned off site or given to sanitation crews for hauling to the landfill.
Iowa revenue officials to step up checks on firms doing business across state lines. Donald Briggs says a wider rotating field audit program will return about 14 dollars for every one spent, with plans to deploy 4 to 8 auditors out of state at a time. The program, aimed at boosting revenue by about 2.5 million this year, also raises auditor qualifications and shifts staff closer to taxpayers.
