The University of Iowa School of Journalism failed to gain accreditation after an American Council on Education for Journalism review. A UPI report says a visiting team in March and the accrediting committee recommendation led to the denial.
Cedar Rapids resident Jack Dunkel 22 died when his motorcycle lost control on a curve off Iowa 150 north of Midway. He struck a road marker, fell onto the roadway, and was hit by a car driven by Florence Winkler 26 of Center Point. No charges were filed.
Sacramento police recounts a thief who once told Sgt. Melvin Cuckovich he should be ashamed for stealing from children. The same man was arrested Thursday in handcuffs at the station and acknowledged the sergeant’s words, saying he had moved on to stealing cars.
Marshall County Sheriff Derald Gonzales reports a Thursday night raid recovered about 200 potted marijuana seedlings. The plants were found about one mile east of Marshalltown in a junked car by the Iowa River, started in discarded cups and malt containers and camouflaged with brush.
A pre construction conference reviewed bids for street and sewer upgrades. Manuet Carter Brooklyn Iowa won the sewer contract for 183644.89 dollars and Glover Construction Boone won the paving contract for 122471.58 dollars. Sewer work starts next week with two crews. paving begins mid August after houses moved and sewer completion. City officials promise minimized public disruption.
Webster County Attorney Louie Beisser outlined larceny charges against six Fort Dodge policemen who resigned. Two felonies involve thefts of lawnmowers from Earl May Garden Center valued at $84.60 and $137.50. Other officers face larceny charges for oil, a jack, and pulleys taken from local businesses.
UPI reports Communists overran Bong Son district capital and pressed toward Hue as South Vietnamese troops retreated from multiple bases. At An Loc helicopters faced heavy fire while medevac crews struggled amid chaotic evacuations and arrests of wounded allies.
McGovern tours northern Ohio factories in a bid to win blue collar workers while Humphrey campaigns in Ohio and Indiana. Wallace eyes Tennessee and North Carolina as Dole assails Democrats on the GOP side. Humphrey backs tax credits for parents of parochial and private school children.

Forty eight youths across Washington County finish a 24 hour Farm Tractor and Machinery Operation course led by instructors Bill Yerington and Jim Hotchkiss. Training at Washington and Kalona emphasized safety and basic operation with age restrictions under U.S. Child Labor Laws. many participants will be available for off home-farm work with training certificates.
A four session program by Washington County Extension Service examines The Future of Washington. Three breakfast meetings run 7:00 8:30 a.m. May 9 16 23 at Captains Table with final session May 31 at the YMCA. Registration $5 covers all meals. Speakers include ISU Extension specialist Dr Dave Hammond and economist Dr Dick Maxon. Reservations due by May 6.
Washington officials joined two meetings in Iowa this week. A Memorial Union Iowa City seminar on home rule outlined implementation steps for the new law with participants including Councilmen Walker, Messer, Stephens, Nicola, City Attorney Owen, Mayor Martin, Clerk Robertson, and Public Works Director Reschly. The International Municipal Signal Association hosted a two day Coralville gathering on traffic devices, signals, alarms and radio comms with Washington attendees Cherry, Glandon, Long, Hesser, and Reschly.
