A trucker strike lockout in its second week worsens as milk wagon drivers join the disruption. Chicago O'Hare warehouses fill while secret talks between competing unions fail to unite 50,000 drivers, prolonging the dispute.
United Press International reports five weekend traffic deaths push Iowa’s 1967 toll to 192, with victims including 22 year old Larry McNutt of Diagonal in a single vehicle crash on Iowa 56, a 41 year old Ottumwa woman and her companion, a 53 year old Winneshiek County resident who died after losing consciousness on a gravel road, Thelma Ruth Clay of Unionville MO, and Dennis Jergovich, a 21 year old Iowa State student, injured in Ames area crash.
National Guardsmen aided rubble cleanup after violent tornadoes and fierce winds felled at least 16 people and injured about 100 across Iowa and southeast Minnesota. In Duluth three brothers and a rescuer died. five more fatalities were reported in Albert Lea and other towns.
Robert Riley, vice president of manufacturing, announced the Advance-Ross plant in Washington will stay closed the week of May 1 to May 5 due to the Chicago truck strike. For May 8 schedules, employees should check the Evening Journal or KCII radio in the afternoon. there will be no work before May 9.

Hail over two inches damaged Des Moines windows. power outages affected several areas. several farms near Clear Lake and Manly sustained heavy damage with no injuries.
Rep Leonard Andersen introduces a bill to allow private and parochial schools to deviate from standards for long standing religious use or high standing private prep aims. A separate Hughes plan would exempt Amish schools from standards if students pass basic-skills tests. The measure seeks to ease certification issues for some advanced private schools.
In Islington, a gang hijacked a van carrying 140 gold bars valued at 750,000 pounds. Ammonia was hurled at the driver and guards, one guard beaten. The trio were hospitalized after being found bound in the back. The bullion belonged to N M Rothschild and Sons and police reported the value at about $2.1 million.
Des Moines reports the 1966 Iowa state income tax deadline is today. All returns must be mailed by midnight to avoid penalties. The deadline covers personal and corporate income taxes, as well as sales and use taxes and consumer use taxes.
Iowa House set to open Tuesday a formal hearing on a proposed new method to distribute and expand state aid to public schools. The plan would lift state aid from 12 percent to about 40 percent, funded by roughly $160 million in new revenue and a companion bill raising $141 million via higher sales and income taxes and a 4 percent surtax on intangibles. The plan would create a basic school tax equalization fund in each county and refund 40 percent of county income tax to that fund, with distributions per pupil and backstop to 85 percent of state expenditure per pupil. Additional property taxes could be levied by districts to spend more. The package targets a split in funding across counties with a statewide tax increase and revised corporate taxation.

China and Moscow clashed over Vietnam policy as China walked out of Red Square May Day ceremonies while Soviet defense minister Grechko denounced American aggression in Vietnam. The clash highlighted a split within the Communist bloc amid U S led bombing campaigns and escalating air combat across Vietnam and neighboring areas.
Des Moines county auditor William R Howe was charged with embezzling 642 dollars in public funds. Municipal court Judge Arthur Petersen continued arraignment to Wednesday and refused to lower bond from 6000 dollars. Howe, a Democrat, resigned the office and Myra Dockendorff was named to fill the term.
