Iowa Senate approves four bill package creating revenue department

The Iowa Senate passed a four bill package to form a new Department of Revenue abolishing the three member Tax Commission and merging liquor control and tax tasks into the department. The plan, part of consolidating 120 agencies into 13, moves to the House with a Jan. 1 effective date.

Marines seize Hill 881 in heavy three day battle near DMZ

In three days of brutal fighting U S Marines captured Hill 881 near the DMZ after heavy machinegun and mortar fire from bunkers and tunnels. Casualties topped 1 000 on both sides with Marines reporting 96 dead and 273 wounded and North Vietnamese losses at least 333 known dead. Air power dominated the action as 11 to 13 MIGs were destroyed, with U S aircraft claiming 48 MIGs shot down in total. A Marine Seaknight helicopter crashed near Da Nang, nine survivors and eight dead. General Westmoreland urged continued public debate on the war while reaffirming U S resolve and inspection plans near the contested border.

Westmoreland backs Vietnam stance amid flag protest

General William C. Westmoreland, in Saigon after a US tour, said about 95 percent of Americans support the Vietnam policy and condemned flag burning as unpatriotic. He urged returning to Vietnam combat zones to assess the Communist threat firsthand.

U S plans 35000 troops and four squadrons pullout from Germany

The United States announces a plan to withdraw 35000 military personnel and four squadrons from West Germany starting next January. The pullout, discussed with Britain and Germany since last October, aims to reduce the dollar drain and balance international payments. Bonn will buy $500 million in special medium-term U.S. securities, and additional American military equipment purchases are planned to offset costs of maintaining forces.

Iowa Weather Outlook Frost Tonight Then Warmer Wednesday

United Press International reports frost or freezing temperatures expected again tonight across Iowa with clear to partly cloudy skies and unseasonably cool conditions. Lows will be in the 20s. Wednesday brings a rise to the 50s in the north and east and near 60 in the southwest as a bit warmer weather moves in.

Five Are Dead In Great Plains Blizzard Storm

A deadly spring blizzard swept the upper Great Plains with 10 foot snow drifts and 77 mph winds. At least five people died as blizzard conditions forced road closures from Wyoming to South Dakota and prompted school shutdowns while tornadoes ripped through Minnesota and the Midwest causing injuries but few fatalities.

Court allows 1 mill tax to bolster city bonding base

The Iowa Supreme Court in a 5 2 ruling said the 1 mill tax on moneys and credits for Korean War bonds may be included in a citys bonding base. Ida Grove faced a $25 000 general obligation bond plan for a bridge, with owners Zobel and Strong contesting inclusion of the war bonds levy.

Three Davenport shootings within 75 minutes prompt police probe

Davenport authorities investigated three related shootings in a 75 minute span. Lloyd Cummings was shot and rushed to Mercy Hospital in poor condition after stumbling into a restaurant near the police station. Andrew Tores, 26, suffered a back wound and remained in critical care. Terry Best, 21, said two men robbed him of $20 and shot him in both feet. he was treated at Mercy in fair condition.

Two Teens Die In Iowa Traffic Crashes

Two youths lost their lives in separate late Monday night crashes in Iowa. Edythe Howlett, 16, of Britt, died when her car left a Hancock county gravel road. she was alone. Tim Worrell, 15, of Davenport, was killed when his motorcycle was hit broadside at an intersection of U.S. 61 and a Scott county gravel road by Merle Gifford, 37, of Muscatine. The Iowa traffic toll rose to 194 for 1967.
