U S Air Force F105s from Thailand bombed rail and highway targets near Hanoi and reported downing two Communist MIGs in eight dogfights over the North Vietnamese capital. Hanoi claimed seven American aircraft were shot down, a figure Hanoi often exaggerates.
The Deep Waters with six crew members is missing and presumed sunk after a violent storm with 105 mph winds and 35 foot seas 190 miles east of New York. The Coast Guard battled hurricane winds to reach the area as Mockingbird sank off New Jersey but crew were rescued.
About 13,000 UC faculty in Berkeley gathered in a Greek theater to protest Governor Reagan's tuition plan and the January dismissal of President Clark Kerr. Chiefs Justice Earl Warren, historian Richard Hofstadter, and economist John Kenneth Galbraith addressed the crowd, praising Kerr while warning of the impact of tuition on students.
Three youths and a woman were arrested in the slaying of Ervin L. Reimers at a Ginn Service Station. Brian Adams 18 Lonnie Wyldes 20 face first degree murder charges. A head-on collision near Forest City Iowa on Friday killed four people including Thomas T Vogel 67 and his wife Armella 66 of Des Moines and Mary Lynn Miller 16 of Dallas Texas plus Conrad Miller 45. Miller was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital Mason City and authorities cited strong winds as a possible factor in the crash.
Spirit Lake Iowa United Press International report says Wayne A Swanson 24 was killed Friday when a falling tree trunk crushed his head while he helped neighbors remove trees from a lawn He died on arrival at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital Swanson and other workers were separating a double trunk tree when the second half cracked and struck him on the skull
Two Graceland College students were killed on a campus sidewalk in Lamoni Iowa in an apparent murder suicide. Sally Gladfelder 18 of Kansas City Missouri was shot in the head and abdomen as she walked with companions near Walker Hall. Hassan Rajabali 24 a sophomore biology student from Teheran Iran died roughly an hour later at Decatur County Hospital in Leon. Rajabali and Gladfelder had been dating but had recently broken up.
Probate of will and appointment of executor for the estate of John Jacob Simmering announced. Court actions set to appoint a qualified executor and administer the decedent's assets under applicable state law. Public notice to creditors and interested parties to file claims by specified deadlines.
Crawfordsville Grade School held an Arbor Day observance with a tree planting ceremony. Pupils donated pennies to fund five trees, one planted in the yard corner to symbolize good citizenship and replace elm losses. Rev. Robt. Rushing opened with an invocation, Mayor Harold Miller issued a proclamation, and school leaders plus students participated in readings, songs, and the dedication.
Dwight D. Larson of South Hamilton Community School at Jewell was named star Iowa Farmer of 1967 at the Iowa Future Farmers of America Leadership Conference. He received a 200 dollar check from the National FFA Foundation and was first named North Central Star District Farmer for 1967 before the state honor. Larson, 18, lives on a 280 acre Randall area farm with his mother and grandmother and works with his uncle. Other district stars include James A. McCreary Mount Ayr. Stanley R. Taylor Hartley. In Westland Michigan police hunted a killer after two young sisters Deborah Crowther eight and Kimberly Crowther six were raped and strangled Friday on their way home from school one block from their residence. The crime followed a year of similar assaults in the suburb prompting neighborhood safety measures.
