Cost-Cutting Plan Outlined by Erbe

Gov Norman A Erbe announced a state cost cutting plan to trim operating expenses by nearly 500000. He spoke at a luncheon in his hometown and noted setup would enable tax data sharing with the federal government and aim to collect about 4 million dollars annually in unpaid state income taxes.

Veterans in Iowa Can Claim RS Policy Dividends

About 3,016 Korean veterans in Iowa may receive more than 352,707 in dividends from RS term insurance policies. Dividends average about 100 and depend on policy age and duration. Veterans must exchange their RS policy for a cheaper term or a low-cost permanent plan before Sept 14, 1963 to receive the payment.

Court Day Here For Seniors Monday As Law Day Observance

Approximately 225 seniors from Mid-Prairie Brighton Ainsworth and Washington high schools attended Court Day at the county courthouse as part of Law Day observances. District Judge R G Yoder spoke with the students while 12 seniors served on a mock jury in a damage suit. The session concluded about 1 30 pm with a plaintiff verdict after a late vote.

Effie VanSickle 88 Dies in West Chester

Effie May VanSickle 88 of West Chester died Monday April 30 1962 at Washington County Hospital after several months illness. Funeral at 2 p m Wednesday Jones Funeral Home with Rev Arthur Peters officiating. Burial West Chester Cemetery. She taught in the county 64 years and was born August 24 1873 in Eureka. Survived by brother Ernest Fairfield and sister Mrs J S Crawford Washington along with several nieces and nephews.

Varied Jr High Concert Showcases Band and Chorus

A large crowd attended the annual junior high school music concert in the high school auditorium. Alan Bergstrom led the junior high band with 75 students, while Mrs. Dean Stanley directed the vocal groups. The program featured band selections, solo numbers, chorus pieces, a girls trio, and a boys double quartet with varied sacred, folk, and light classical works.

Storms Leave Eight Dead Across Nine States

Storms and tornadoes slash nine states causing heavy damage and at least eight deaths with 145 injuries. Illinois reports five dead, multiple injuries. Michigan one death and 25 injuries. Indiana two dead and 43 injuries. Other states see scattered harm including Kentucky and Arkansas.

U.S. scientists plan higher yield nuclear tests in Pacific

U.S. scientists will devote May and June to boosting punch per pound in warheads with blasts up to five megatons near Christmas Island. A second objective on high altitude and space effects on missiles will push into June or July at Johnston Island. The program aims to test high altitude screens against enemy missiles and to measure communications impact.
