A brooder house housing 250 baby chickens burned at the Lloyd Humston farm west of Washington on Sunday morning. Robert Leichty operates the farm. no one was home. Don Hayes reported the smoke and alerted the fire department and Farmers Mutual Insurance truck. Firefighters could not save the structure amid strong winds. the house was insured.

Secretary Fatally Stabbed Des Moines Slayings
A 25 year old secretary Ramona Cox was stabbed to death in her Des Moines apartment after letting a short stocky man inside around 10:30 p.m. Neighbors saw a man jump from a window and flee. Police described a violent struggle and indicated a linoleum knife caused the wound. The motive and suspect remain under investigation. Cox worked as a secretary for C. D. Willcox and Co. and had several boyfriends being questioned. A 25 year old, 5 foot 8 inch, 160 pound description circulated statewide.

Jesse G. Augustine, 78, died Sunday morning at Washington County Hospital after several months of ill health. He lived at 721 West Madison Street and was buried at New Haven Cemetery after services at Jones Funeral Home led by Rev. Richard Peterson. He was born January 14, 1884 in Washington County and married Pearl S. Wolfe in 1906. He farmed locally, later worked for the Jefferson County highway department, and returned to Washington in 1956. Survivors include his widow, six children, fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two brothers, three sisters, and numerous relatives. one daughter preceded him in death.

Lightning struck a tree near the Kenneth Patterson farm home four miles west of Richland causing attic wiring to burn and fill with smoke. Richland volunteer firemen checked the scene for about two hours after arriving shortly after 5 30 PM Saturday and reported little damage beyond wiring.
