Jerrey of Ottumwa suffered serious injuries after being struck by a Burlington train at the west end wall park, underscoring dangers in local rail crossings and prompting city safety concerns.
In Des Moines the attorney general's office states officials may not fund ministerial mileage or compensation for burial services of a relief client. Jens Grothe asserts church and state are absolutely divorced and public funds may not support denominational religious purposes.
WEST UNION Charles Thurston, 20, of Sencer, held on charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. An alleged member of a five man magazine sales group, Thurston is accused of getting Gordon Mosby Elgin postmaster’s daughter Marline 7 to search home for money, claiming the father ordered her to give it. The girl reportedly turned over $1.55.
LaVerne Kehoe of Riceville postponed departure from Fayette Thursday night due to heavy fox. Early Friday his car collided three miles west of Charles City with another driven by M R Sidwell of Decorah. Kehoe suffered minor injuries. Sidwell was arrested by Sheriff Atherton on charges of driving while intoxicated.
M L Downey of Burlington federal wage hour law investigator spoke in Cedar Rapids estimating unpaid wages totaling 60 000 to 80 000 for local workers under the wage hour act in effect since 1938. He cited cases in similar cities where 24 of 25 complaints showed violations in some form.
A Coralville dam project of six million dollars remains stalled as engineer Cal CC P iross and Iowa state officials clash. Governor Wilson reportedly refuses to stamp approval and declines to release a letter Gross requested, keeping the final stance on the project undisclosed.
Des Moines observers reported a brilliant northern lights show with streamers across the north sky and a rare band of white or yellow light in the southeast. Astronomers linked the glow to recent sunspot activity and magnetic disturbances in the upper atmosphere.
In Des Moines a father defended his six year old son Duane Stinson in municipal court after the youth bit a man’s ear during a truck parking dispute. Stinson pleads not guilty to mayhem, a conviction could bring five years and a $1000 fine. The injured man did not attend the hearing. The father asked leniency saying removing the boy would not restore the ear and the man does not want to press charges. the boy should tend his raspberry patch.
Lewis A. Warren, longtime advertising manager of The Evening Journal, resigns to assume an executive role with the Iowa Daily Press association in Des Moines. He will start April 15, working with thirty three leading town dailies, while his wife and daughter relocate after school ends. The Journal notes his tireless service and broad community involvement including Y M C A activities and international leadership.
Wayland society note reports the death of farmer John K. Leichty 78 at his Noble county home after a four month illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sugar Creek church where he was a member and trustee. he leaves wife Sarah Cotrad, four sons Noah Paul Aaron and Emery, two brothers Chris and Jacob, and many relatives.
The case of O. M. Hentsleigh against Levi and Deb by Simons resumes in district court Monday when Judge J. G. Patterson returns to Washington after a weekend. Evidence was offered at a hearing that began yesterday afternoon, with no session held today. Local points are involved in the action.

A Sigourney truck loaded with live stock and a Fairfield car collided at Temple corner six miles west of Washington on No. 82. Harold Northrup and Dr. Ray Kirkpatrick’s party suffered minor injuries from glass, while both drivers emerged unhurt and the truck sustained heavy damage.

Firemen responded to a blaze at Mrs William Smith’s 4006 Past Third Street residence near Burlington station. The attic fire was brought under control with only light damage to the house and contents.
Seven individuals passed automobile driving tests at the courthouse and received licenses to operate motor vehicles. Three failed. Licenses were issued to Cyril James, Herbert Huber, Francis Ralston, George Hubbs, Washington James Beranek, Riverside, Katie R. Frey, Fred Frey, and Kalona. Chauffeur licenses went to Clarence M. Panzer of Washington, Warren Anderson of Olds, and Harold Coffman of Richland. One failed the chauffeur exam.
The Washington board of education re elected the current corps of teachers for the next school year. Contracts to be signed within two weeks. some may not accept new terms due to marriages or other positions. No salary changes are planned. assignments may shift. Superintendent Ralston cites satisfactory work and expects little personnel change.
Delbert Bailey wins first prize a barrel of gasoline for averaging 30 miles per gallon on a one tenth mile Mercury Economy contest course. John Den Hartog and Bastiaan Den Hartog take second and third prizes of 3 and 2 gallons with 29 and 28 mpg. The overall contestant average is 24. miles per gallon on a 0.1 mile course. Des Moines Mercury test reports 1834 miles of 2750 with 86.1 gallons used.
A Fairfield district court jury finds Lee Williams of Lucerne Missouri guilty of first degree murder in the March 2 shooting at a beer tavern near Fairfield. Williams faces a life prison term after the 35 hour deliberation. The victim was Mimncen Harter of Stockport and the case involved Mabel Murdy of Ottumwa.
Washington junior college plans a two day educational trip to Chicago. Dean Harland Mead and Mrs. Mead will chaperone as a deluxe Milwaukee railroad coach departs Friday at 1 26 AM from Union station. The itinerary includes the Stock Exchange, Board of Trade, Chinatown, Stockyards, University of Chicago campus, and multiple museums with meals and hotel stay at Stevens.
