Ralph Armstrong of Fairfield suffered a scalp wound when struck by a car driven by Leonard Guthrie in Ottumwa. The incident occurred locally with Armstrong receiving medical attention. Guthrie remained at the scene, and no further details were provided.
In Oskaloosa Jim mie Bass a Penn college student and Tip Lamberson a high school student conducted amateur chemical experiments. An explosion drew police and fire units to the scene with negligible damage and minor burns sustained by the boys.
Audubon society figure Mrs Kerberg, wife of the town's new mayor, showcased a hat decorated with eggshells at a bridge party last week. Green yarn added a crassly decorative touch to the Easter themed bonnet.

Lady a springer spaniel owned by K. K. Sawyer Fairfield dime store manager produced 13 puppies in a single birth a rarity among spaniels. The litter comprised nine males and four females all alive and healthy a week later according to dog enthusiasts.
Council Bluffs Pound master Chris Christensen unveils a free zoo at the city dog pound for school children. He reports receiving an offer of an alligator from Plymouth Wisconsin for transport and is arranging two Buffalo and other promises for wildlife, including a raccoon, lion, mother bear, cub foxes, monkeys, wild geese, and peacocks from California.
Marshall County Sheriff Harry Jennings detained two men two women and four children after a broadcast to arrest them. The group was surrendered to Albia and Winterset authorities for robbery charges near Winterset.
Newton reports a money raising plan by a Boy Scout cub pack for a parcel post sale on April 27. Girls from Jasper county church societies back the effort with packaging and autograph sales being sought from notable figures nationwide.
A tired hitchhiker named Edward Duminy, 30, of Newton, caused a Newton area traffic tieup west of Colfax when he could not flag a ride to Des Moines. Patrolmen reported Duminy said he grew weary and lay down hoping someone would stop him.
Washington County treasurer records show March tax payments totaling 230 448 26 with a state refund of 57 339 76 for the first half of 1940 homestead taxes. Treasurer Marion George expects March and prior entries to push 1940 collections past half. Second half due in September. Railroads with tracks in the county paid about 160 000 and Iowa Southern Utilities contributed 7 274 20.
John H. Younkin aged 80 died this morning at 7 30 at his Riverside area home after a period of failing health. He was born July 1 1860 on the Riverside farm and lived there his whole life. He leaves his wife Anna Ford five sons Everett Verne Allan Harold and Glen all at home three brothers Samuel Cedar Rapids Morris Eugene Alfred Riverside a sister Mrs Laura Smith Plainview Texas. Two sisters are deceased. He was a member of Riverside Methodist church and the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges. He served as secretary of the Y school district for over fifty years before resigning last year.
Washington fire department battled five grass fires on Day 3 across the county. In town, a grass fire on South Avenue B affected the Elmer McFadden and Marie Birks homes with no damage. In the country, a forested tract near Forrest Brinning’s place burned brush and erasures with no trees harmed. A separate small grass fire west of town was controlled, while another north of town remained unaddressed due to a truck outage. The Kalona fire truck assisted control north of town.

Mrs. Mary Deuel 85 widow of Charles Deuel died of a heart attack while lighting gas at her kitchen stove in Washington. Her body was found Sunday afternoon. neighbor Mrs. Libby Snider, overcome by gas, survived after treatment. Coroner ruled death from heart attack. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM at Sherman’s with Rev. William M Nichol officiating. Burial in Woodland Cemetery. Mary E. Logan's family history noted. Devel family long resident in area.

Kustus Shepard, a 93 year old retired farmer, and his wife died less than four days apart after 65 years of marriage. They were buried in a single grave at Beaver, with Mrs Shepard passing 86 hours before her husband after a long illness. He had been in ill health and followed her soon after.
Count Ferdinand Nieswitsz, a 33 year old Austrian known as the smallest perfectly proportioned man, spent several hours in Washington en route to St. Louis to join The European Midgets. He will perform as Count Ferdy the Tumbling Whirlwind and demonstrates spry cart wheels in public places. He recently left Austria as a refugee and learned English by talking with tourists.

Des Moines reports from Federal Weatherman Charles D Reed and Agricultural Statistician Leslie M Carl give a cheerful outlook for spring planting. They note ample soil moisture, with a foot or so saturated, and say April showers and sunny days will boost sowing of oats barley and spring wheat in early to mid April.

Robert J Nelson longtime Washington resident died Saturday at his home 421 South Avenue D following a stroke that began a week earlier. Funeral services are Tuesday at 10 30 am at the United Presbyterian Church with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. He was born in Columbus City Iowa in 1868 and worked as a machinist and auto mechanic. He lived most of his life in Washington aside from years in Texas and is survived by his sister Metta Nelson two nieces and three grandnieces.
