E. K. Schlapkohl says students and teachers in the Washington Community School district have spring vacation on Friday, March 31 and Monday, April 3. Classes resume at normal time Tuesday, April 4.
Residents awoke to a five inch snowfall with .58 inches of moisture reported by the weather observer at 7 am. Light snow and rain persisted through the morning as temperatures stayed moderate and the wet accumulation began melting quickly.
Dick Bordwell of Washington was treated at Mercy Hospital Iowa City for a fractured knee after his pickup hit an icy spot and crashed near Mediapolis last night. He was alone and is in good condition.
In Baena Spain Jose Maria Pulido died at 107 two weeks after receiving a cash prize a medal and a signed photo of Generalisimo Franco for fathering 44 children He had 13 children by his first wife 11 by his second and 20 by his third He is survived by 72 grandchildren and was married three times
Terry Knight, manager of Grand Funk Railroad, filed a $55 million damage suit in State Supreme Court charging the three singers and their attorney with maliciously conspiring to take over GFR Enterprises and oust him from his job. The action alleges a deliberate plot to replace him as manager.
Case Western Reserve University professor Dr Olaf Pearson reports low daily doses of L-dopa slowed rapidly spreading breast cancer in two of seven women tested at University Hospitals Cleveland. He cautions results are not uniform and more study is needed before it moves beyond the experimental stage.
Oregon educator Charles C. Woodcock with 18 years of experience in blind education was chosen to lead the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton. He will replace Dr. Frank Rocco, who resigned July 1, and currently serves as superintendent of the Oregon State School for the Blind in Salem.
Standard Oil Division of America Oil Co. said it will move its centralized credit card operations from Chicago to Des Moines in September 1974. Des Moines manager B L Gass said the Des Moines division will handle accounts from 15 Midwestern states while another center will be set up in Raleigh, North Carolina for eastern and southern accounts.
Gov. Robert D. Ray retorts that Democratic rival Paul Franzenburg would raise taxes with a plan to restrict the income tax for the wealthy. He cites 1971 Legislature relief and argues tying Iowa’s income tax to the federal system would hurt middle earners earning 9 000 to 20 000 yearly.
The Christian Church hosts Good Friday services on March 31 at 7 30 p m sponsored by the Council on Religious Affairs. The Rev Richard Peterson of First Baptist Church gives the meditation on A Sin Bearer. High school choir sings Blessed Lord All Love Excelling directed by Robert Youngquist. United Press International reports continued travel warning for eastern Iowa with snow ending by evening and clearing Thursday morning. West Iowa sees partly cloudy skies tonight and tomorrow with a dip to teens to 20s and highs in 30s to 40s.
A spring snowstorm slid into Iowa with heavy wet snow in the southeast, bringing near 10 inches in Burlington and seven inches in the Quad Cities. Two to four additional inches were possible before it ends this afternoon as northerly parts saw no snow and mixed sun.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-1 decision, finds Ford Motor Co violated the Clayton Act by paying 28 million for Electric Autolite assets in 1961, upholding a Detroit federal judge’s 1970 ruling. The top court also rules Topco Associates infringed Sherman Act by exclusive territorial allocations across 33 states, dismissing its defense that divisions were needed to run a private label program.
In Waterloo, a general boycott of classes failed to take hold with most students attending. Hawthorne Elementary saw two thirds of its 365 pupils out on the fifth day, while Grant and Roosevelt reported only modest absences. The boycott aimed to protest Principal Dean Flanders firing and push for better education at Hawthorne.
In St Louis a Missouri attorney general ruling bars judges from fees for marriages, leaving couples to seek clergy. Rev Louis C Johnson, a 63 year old minister and janitor at the Circuit Court, performs quick ceremonies in empty courtrooms, often for little or no pay.
North Vietnam said it will not abandon the suspended Paris peace conference and will pursue a political settlement while continuing to fight until the United States ends its policy of arming South Vietnamese forces. The Hanoi delegation accused the Nixon administration of sabotaging the talks and pledged to revive the conference for a solution based on national rights and self determination.
Vern Carpenter of the Iowa Department of Public Instruction said higher costs for food labor and supplies could force districts to raise lunch prices from 40 to 45 cents. Schools must apply before changes and officials hope to wait until next fall.
Agriculture Department data indicate beef cattle prices for the 30 days ending March 15 declined from the February 15 peak. Forecasters expect the March 15 average around $31.80 per hundredweight, down about 50 cents to $1 from $32.60, with live cattle also above year-earlier levels.
The Washington County Pork Producers Association elected new officers at their meeting Tuesday night. Marian Owens of Ainsworth was named president, Bob Carter of Kalona secretary-treasurer, with Bob Bonar of Washington and Bob Johnson of Washington as publicity chairmen. Retiring officers include Larry Marek, Riverside president, Larry Lasek, Ainsworth vice president, and Ted Griffith, Wellman secretary-treasurer. New directors named: Bob Carter Kalona, Bob Greiner Keota, Duane Miller Wellman, Forest Eubanks Crawfordsville. retiring directors Marek Griffith Oral Norman Wellman and Herb Rich.
Senate Judiciary Committee reopens hearings as ITT President Harold S. Geneen faces further questioning on links between antitrust settlement and ITT political contributions. Geneen cites discussions with top officials, including John Mitchell, while Kleindienst nomination looms. A memo by ITT lobbyist Dita Beard sparked renewed inquiries. Beard later vanished to Denver with heart trouble.
