Easter Egg Hunt Set by Washington Jaycees at Sunset Park

The Washington Jaycees schedule their annual Easter egg hunt for 9 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Park. Egg hunters will be divided into three age groups with prizes for each category.

Wayland Home Destroyed by Fire

The Arthur Allred home at the west edge of Wayland was gutted by fire Wednesday. Wayland volunteers fought the blaze after a passerby saw smoke from the fire room house around noon. The flames caused severe interior damage and reignited later in the afternoon, leaving the house practically in ruins.

Chamber Kicks Off 1972 Membership Drive in Banquet

Washington Chamber of Commerce announces a Membership Appreciation Banquet at the K C Hall on April 26 with Robert W. Carlson Minnesota Public Service Commissioner as speaker. Richard Anderson chairs the drive and proceeds support the Washington High School Jazz Band which plans to travel to Switzerland for an International Jazz Festival. Tickets cost 5 dollars and are available at the Chamber office and from board members.

Father and daughter die in motorcycle crash near Hamburg

George Vavra, 42, of Madison Nebraska, and his 18-year-old daughter Joani were killed when their motorcycle left U S 275 a mile north of Hamburg. The Iowa Highway Patrol said Vavra appeared to lose control on a curve, and the bike flipped twice before stopping about 420 feet from the highway.

Denison Woman and Two Children Die in Ida County Crash

A young Denison woman Rebecca Wessendorf 21 and her two sons 3-year-old John Jr and 1 year old James Paul were killed in a two car collision on a gravel road in Ida County near Holstein Iowa authorities reported.

Balloonist sets three hot air balloon records in endurance and distance

Matt Wiederkehr, 42, from St. Paul, landed at Elmer Engelken farm after eight hours 37 minutes aloft from Holman Field. He broke AX-6 endurance, AX-8 endurance, and distance records, flying mostly around 1,800 feet and peaking above 3,000 feet amid turbulent air.
