Iowa Public Safety officials report the traffic death toll for January and February is below the 1971 pace. Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sellers notes 88 deaths this year versus 97 in the same period last year, with four fewer in January and five fewer in February.
A 31 year old Denver man Allen Steege died instantly in a head on collision with a semi trailer on U S 63 south of Denver. He was attempting to pass a vehicle that had stopped to turn right. The truck driver Raymond Kester 33 of Chester Illinois was not hurt.
Des Moines Democratic candidate Franzenburg frames tax reform as essential to a broad agenda. He targets relief for property taxes, opposes higher sales tax, and argues the rich should bear new revenue while criticizing Republican incumbents for aiding the wealthy. His project The Effect of the Earth's Magnetic Field on the Germination of Corn showed south pointing corn germinating faster than east pointing corn. Yoder earns a spot at the International Science Fair May 26 in New Orleans with coach SS Statler of West Chester.
