After a four day hearing District Judge Paul H McCord ordered Guthrie county Auditor William E Chappell removed from office for willful and habitual misconduct. The petition was filed by Iowa Attorney General John M Rankin and cited 1939 and 1940 reports showing advance pay warrants to himself and others and failure to comply with the budget law leading to overdrawn county funds.

Poison drug sale linked to multiple deaths across cities
James Clark of the Midwest FDA said about one thousand contaminated bottles, used as a pneumonia remedy, caused two deaths and many illnesses in at least 12 cities.
