The Des Moines column notes the Iowa House voted 82 to 0 to allow husbands to sue for up to 10000 for loss of a wife's services as homemaker and mother if she is injured or killed. The bill amends a law that ties value to outside employment. It currently favors employed wives over homemakers in such cases.
Prompted by the 1940 infantile paralysis outbreak, lawmakers vote to expand the State University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City for children who may never walk. About 225 Iowans on a waiting list, action targets the orthopedic operating room bottleneck and heat during sterilization. Representative E L Stewart notes harsh conditions as operations delay until cooler evenings.
Mrs. Rachel Johnson, 50, was critically injured when struck by a North Western Toad passenger train on a single track trestle near Sioux City. She and Armelia James were crossing the bridge. Johnson panicked and was dragged to the Floyd river bank as the wheels severed her left leg. James clung to a safety girder and was not struck.

Grundy Center officers say 21 year old Heiko Clapp confessed to taking a billfold with 960 dollars from his father Joe Clapp's home eight miles northeast of town. Sheriff Meyers and Deputy Lolwing reported 820 dollars was located in a haymow at H C Primus farm where Heiko worked. Heiko said he spent 14 dollars. the rest was found in a jacket.

Donald A Adams aged four, son of Mrs Phyllis Adams of Mason City, drowned in Willow creek while playing near the dam in West park. A four year old companion yelled for help as the Adams boy remained under water until bystanders were alerted. Mrs Leo Powers heard the shouts and notified authorities.
