In Des Moines the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs conducts a poll as it vocally opposes President Roosevelt’s proposal to reorganize the supreme court. The organization surveys members across Iowa to gauge sentiment on the plan.
Des Moines reports state income tax receipts 24 percent ahead of last year on the same day, according to LaVerne Clark director of the Iowa state income division.
A two year old boy named Dennis Shutt fatally scalded at a farm home near Norwalk when he climbed into a bucket of boiling water after his mother set it on the floor. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Shutt.
Carl L. Dunn aged 45 was found dead at his Keokuk home with gas burners lit when his wife and two children returned from Easter services. He was a salesman for the Keokuk Electric Co.
Mr and Mrs A C Helvick of Beaver township Humboldt county have a line of champion spellers. Over eight years the Helvick family produced the district 1 champ. Saturday Dorothy and Marjorie reached the county finals.
A swinging 100 foot wire will display Earth rotation as a pendulum demonstration during a Science visitors program at Iowa State College on April 10. The swinging weight shows the pendulum effect as part of the central building exhibit.
Iowa City voters face a mayor and city council election while Attorney General John H. Mitchell defers action to the Johnson County attorney. A petition accuses utility interests of illegal campaign acts.
Johan Van Zonneveld from Sassenheim Holland paid his former schoolmates the Van Velsen brothers a visit recently. Van Eneveld is a tulip salesman who has crossed the Atlantic 65 times and makes the trip yearly. He and the Van Velsen brothers were schoolmates in Holland.
The Maple Grove district votes April 24 on a 7500 bond for three rural schools with a 10 year levy to cover bond and interest. Weaver township holds a separate election on a 23000 bond for seven schools. A Kiardy special election April 24 considers an 8000 bond to replace a school lost to fire last year.
Sioux City jewelry dealer William A. Ehlerman and railroad man Fred Jaeger are asked to show cause why they cannot account for $27,615 in assets of their jewelry company. The creditors accuse concealment in a bankruptcy hearing five years ago and note a prior robbery linked to a Sioux Falls powder house explosion. Ehlerman faces additional charges of conspiracy to defraud an insurance company.
Handbills urging support for communist candidate George Everheart appear in Oskaloosa prompting election worries. Everheart, a Democrat, denounces the bills and Sheriff Frank Hook offers a reward for identifying those who issued them.
Rebels mass forces for a new Madrid assault as artillery bombards the city and loyalist air raids strike at enemy concentrations. One shell hit a gas main while loyalists defend against the rebel advance. In Bayonne a Spanish naval action damaged a coal carrier bound for Bilbao with two armed trawlers firing on the Mar Castre.
Elizabeth Jane Simkins five years old died Sunday at 8 20 am after an illness of one day ptomaine poisoning listed as the cause of death. Born April 6 1932 she was a daughter of Everett and Myrtle Long Simkins of Ainsworth. Funeral services Wednesday at 2 30 pm at the home of grandparents William and Mrs Simkins in Columbus City with Rev H Fred Sharpe of the United Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Columbus City. Surviving are her parents two sisters Darlene and Rosemary and a brother Billy. Grandparents on both sides also survive. Funeral arrangements are with Sherman’s funeral home.
The estate of William G Wood sues Ralph Moore for damages after Wood died in an auto crash two years ago near Monroe Iowa. Trial began previously and was dismissed. it reopened today in district court with H S Life and George Baker representing the plaintiff administratrix Mrs Wood. Defense is by J W Livingston and Langdon.
The Presbyterian congregational dinner and business meeting will be held Wednesday at 6 30 pm in the church. Yearly reports will be given and officers should be ready to present them. Mrs J C Carris, in charge, says meat coffee and potatoes will be finished. members should bring vegetables salads sandwiches and table service.
Washington report shows the United States importing corn at record rates due to drought and crop policies. Argentine corn reaches New York and Chicago with about 20 cents net profit per bushel despite 25 cent duties. First four months of the marketing year total 24,225,000 bushels, nearing two third of the 1934 35 record. acreage remains unchanged as farmers hold to prior plans.
Josephine Anne Shalla, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Shalla, died at 2 30 this afternoon at the county hospital after a week’s stay. She was born April 22 1935.
Hanson department store reduces start time for women employees to 8:30 each morning starting this week. Store opens at 8 o’clock daily with closing hours unchanged.
Washington reports over 700000 farming families receive aid from the Resettlement Administration and more than 25000 Great Plains drought migrants head to Pacific coast states. Officials say immediate need for developed farms to replace dust ruined lands, with reclamation projects years away. Half of migrants are destitute. WPA aid insufficient. States, led by Idaho and Washington, expand relief. Oregon limits to railroad fare for return home.
A new Iowa conservation draft keeps the current fishing and hunting status intact for sportsmen. Attorney General Mitchell sent it to the conservation director for review by Senate and House committees after a Supreme Court ruling. it establishes a permanent season on all fish and game and allows the commission to adjust seasons based on surveys, while licenses remain unchanged.
Orville Sylvester, about 25, a farm hand for Vic Vogel near Keota, is jailed in Washington county on larceny charges after admitting to stealing shelled corn for months. Vogel reported about seven bushels taken and found in Sylvester's car. he allegedly sold grain in Fairfield. A larceny charge and hearing were expected today.
Superintendent E A Kiston announced Washington schools will push spring vacation back by a week or two this year. The delay avoids clashing with the district high school music contest scheduled for April 9 and 10, with vacation to occur after the event.
Washington fire department responded twice to calls from local farms but found no fire damage. At J. W. Park farm, smoke filled the house yet no fire developed. Later, near the county home, a chimney burning prompted arrival but no further action was needed.
Washington county projects totaling 84,243 in official estimates were funded by Public Works Administration grants over the past three years. The list, complete through February 10, shows Kalona school addition 41,698 with 18,698 grant, Washington sanitary sewer 21,818 with 9,818 grant, Riverside auditorium gymnasium 22,727 with 10,227 grant, as part of WPA related relief work scope.
