Ernest Nicolaisen, Spencer painter, was sentenced to one year in the Anamosa reformatory after escaping from jail hours before his transfer to Cherokee state hospital for an inebriate. He was recaptured within 24 hours when Waterloo police recognized him.
Mise Lorraine Peterson of Alta is chosen as the ideal secretary by classmates at the National Business Training School. The vote cites personal character and proficiency as key factors in the selection.
Washington residents prepare to vote Monday to elect a mayor and city council members for two years. Polls run 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with two rival tickets Citizens and Economy fielding candidates for mayor treasurer assessor park commissioner and ward councilmen amid fundraising difficulties and local band support.
A 5000 slander suit was filed in Mason City against Hall Clothing Co and its manager Irving Needleman by local truck driver Ewing. The suit alleges Needleman asked Ewing in front of others what he did with clothes allegedly stolen from the store.
Chariton reports Clyde Frye, 21, of Cambria, severely injured when struck by a Rock Island train near Millerton while working on an underpass project. He reportedly crossed the track then stepped back into the path of the oncoming train and was rushed to Yocom hospital.
Des Moines meteorologist Charles P. D. Reed says a downswing in the weather cycle will bring a much cooler and rainier Iowa summer than 1936, the state’s hottest on record.
Sioux City authorities plan an appeal against a 5 186 district court ruling in favor of Alonzo Hammond a Chicago consulting engineer who sued the city over a railroad terminal survey begun in September 1930. He says he was promised 9000 but received 5000 with 1186 interest noted. the city argues the work was not completed.
Brighton hosts the pre district declamatory contest with participants from Brighton Hartwick Keota Lone Tree Marengo Oxford West Liberty and Williamsburg. Conrad Schadt Williamshore won the oratorical division Vermelia Stout Brighton topped the second and Garth Hite Marengo led in drama. Corrine Foster West Liberty took humorous top honors with James Lyle Keota second. First place winners advance to the West Liberty district contest next week. Judges were three members of the Oskaloosa high school speech department.
Miss Mary McConaughy of Des Moines will spend the weekend at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. BE. M. McConaughy.
Washington High School band will debut new uniforms this fall described as sharp and modern. The district plans a formal presentation for students and parents to preview the ensemble and color choices before the marching season begins.

An Easter sunrise service for all young people will be held at the Y M A tomorrow at 6 am with Dr F W Eastwood Presbyterian pastor as speaker. Special music and group singing will open the program followed by a breakfast in the banquet room with tickets at 15 cents. Methodist young people join the union gathering at six o clock.
Rep. Martin Dies of Texas says organized labor will voluntarily abandon sit-down strikes within a week. He predicts unions will renounce the tactic as Congress considers measures to outlaw it and define it as interstate restraint, with a plan for employer notice and negotiated reopenings.
Officials from the Iowa state planning board and Iowa State College extension service conduct a statewide leisure survey aided by 20 000 questionnaires. The study, led by Prof J R Fitzsimmons, inventories public and semi public leisure spaces and gathers cross section data on activities at home and away, travel distances and participation frequency to guide future facilities.

The body of Fred L. Maytag, washing machine magnate, is en route from Los Angeles to Newton Iowa. He died yesterday and will be buried Tuesday in the town where he was once mayor.
A nine ounce premature baby died in Brooklyn after a 20 hour battle for life. The report notes the infant’s fragile start and tragic loss on March 27.
Police say a man who died had tucked an item under his coat before leaving a drug store. He is currently serving a 20 day sentence.
