From Iowa State College the Ames glee club will embark on a five day concert tour through Iowa and Illinois. Twenty eight members will be led by Prof Tolbert MacRae head of the music department.
Alfred Hoover, 30, operator of a Bode service station, was found dead in his car in the garage. Coroner J. W. Coddington ruled death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Hoover's wife and a daughter survive. his dog also died in the car.
Fumigation of Manawa Public School begins and the building will stay closed for two weeks due to widespread smallpox in the village. Director H A M Barrett reports 155 pupils enrolled with only about 15 vaccinated.
An eight month old, Stephen Roberts, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence B Roberts, was found smothered to death in his baby buggy at their southeast Mason City home. Mrs Roberts said she fed him at 9 a m and he seemed to sleep. later she found him dead when waking him for the afternoon. Coroner J B McDonald is notified.
In Webster county town, the mayoral race between Edgar Johnson and Elmer Daniels ends with 102 votes each. Assistant County Attorney Don J. Mitchell rules the contest must be settled by a straw draw at tonight’s council meeting, as incumbent PD L Williams did not seek re election.
In Marshalltown, Kred TM M Thompson, an elderly man, was found dead by a meter reader in a gas filled home. Coroner Rodney Wells said Thompson likely died a day or more earlier, the stove handle moved accidentally, and the room showed signs of attempted egress.
A second group of Iowa high school students arrives at the University of Iowa to boost total competitors to nearly 1,000 for two national events. Winners from district tournaments join the state forensic tournament ending Saturday. Also present are participants in the fifteenth annual play production festival on campus.
Rev Walter H Moore of Ames preached at the closing session of a three day institute at University Church of Christ. In business, Rev K K Lister Creston was chosen president with Rev R Stevens Des Moines as vice president and Rev R W Filmore Brighton as secretary treasurer.
Robert J. Burt files a $0,000 damage suit for John Fanning Gravity WPA worker against Sheriff Wells, the Taylor County sheriff, and the Fidelity and Casualty Co of New York. The petition claims false imprisonment and oppression in office from July to September last year and alleges lack of right to appearance before a magistrate.
The Corn Show committee offers 5 dollars to the person submitting the best name for a Washington October corn festival. Entries must be mailed or delivered to the Chamber of Commerce secretary’s office by April 3. The event will feature lavish corn displays, a parade, Midway amusements, and nationally famous entertainment.
A Washington church lay committee announces a union dinner for men from all congregations on April 4 at 6 30 pm in the United Presbyterian dining room. Tickets 50 cents, meal 40 cents, expenses 10 cents. Newell Day of Davenport will speak on You're Askin We' and a music program with local pupils will close. An expected 200 plus men from country churches may attend. Fifteen Hi Y boys will wait on tables.
William Burton Fordyce aged 69 died at 7 30 this morning at the Washington county hospital after weeks of illness. He was born December 31 1870 in Washington county and lived here since returning from Colorado twenty six years ago. He worked for Iowa Southern Utilities and the telephone company and was a member of the Washington Knights of Pythias and Riverside Masonic lodge. Funeral services set for Saturday at four o clock at L A Jones funeral home. He is survived by his step mother two nieces and two nephews.
The Senate Military Affairs Committee gave favorable action to a War Department policy permitting foreign powers to purchase late model U S war planes. The vote was 6 to 4 against an overall probe into foreign arms purchases, as La Follette urged. Secretary Woodring and other Army officials presented the policy to the House committee a day earlier.
Four Washington county young men will attend the Oakville CCC camp next week. Names include Lyle Brock of Washington and Enos.
Donald Powers and Ann Kes sel, both of Washington, obtained a marriage license yesterday.

Des Moines March 28 Iowa will hold a state Democratic convention in Des Moines on May 7 to choose delegates for the national convention in Chicago on July 15 The state central committee announced Iowa will send 22 delegates and county conventions will select delegates May 4 with precinct caucuses April 29 to May 1 The state convention will include about 2 150 delegates.
Mrs Adda Belle Fisher 79 died at 11 30 p m at the home of her daughter Mrs Glenn Martin a mile south of West Chester after a stroke on January 13. Funeral services are tentative for 2 p m Saturday at the Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born Cullumber September 15 1860 she lived in Seventy Six township before marrying David Fisher April 5 1881. Survived by sons Roy and Walter and daughters Mrs Glenn Martin Mrs Milton Strickler, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
Muscatine police hold Edward Skelton 28 Winterset farm hand in connection with the theft of two cars and an attempted burglary at Harper. He admitted attempting to break into a Harper store but denied ties to a recent post office robbery. He was arrested after leaving a Grandview filling station and Keokuk County authorities were to obtain custody later.
London reports Iowa farm participation in the federal agricultural adjustment program rose sharply over three years. National figures show 54.4 percent in 1937, 57.6 in 1938, and 80.2 in 1934. Washington and Jefferson counties show rising local participation across 1937 1938 and 1939 with multiple percent values.
Washington Iowa Corn Festival committee proposes lining streets with growing corn to advertise the event. The plan aims to showcase corn as the town's key product with a wide community effort including township booster committees and a giant corn kernel mosaic map.
SIGOURNEY March 28 Sheriff H M Putnam of Washington county and Sheriff K B Tremmell of Keokuk county investigated a post office and store robbery at Thornburg and a store burglary at Harper. They believe the crimes may be tied to a gang active in Washington county recently at West Chester and Crawfordsville. Deputy C D Banes said little of value was taken in the Thornburg and Henderson burglaries. A postal inspector from Ottumwa assisted in the probe.
A committee aims to raise working capital by selling Corn Crop club buttons countywide through rural-town booster groups. Local people with one or more ears of corn may obtain buttons once a contest winner is chosen. The plan mirrors the Centennial Commission approach used last summer and should be set up within ten days.
Mrs. Deemer of Tuskeega in Decatur county was en route by ambulance to Iowa City. Near Knoxville she could go no farther and was admitted to a not yet officially opened hospital, where she became the first patient and gave birth to a daughter.
Funeral services for Charles H. Bear 68 who died after a brief illness will be held Friday at 3 PM at L A Jones funeral home. Rev R C Keagy and Rev I Viedmund will officiate. Burial in Elim Grove cemetery. Bear long lived in Cedar township born December 10 1871. Survived by three children Clayton Washington Jane Taylor Chicago and Charlies Harvard law student Cambridge. He leaves three sisters and several grandchildren. He was a longtime Cedar township school board member and prominent livestock farmer. member Prairie Flower church.
The Foursquare church will not hold service Friday night due to the Waster drama performance scheduled for that evening at the church. The production is expected to draw congregants and community members to the church venue.
The National Labor Relations Board ruled Swift & Co. had just cause in firing 1564 striking workers who refused to leave the Sioux City plant. It found a legal violation in backing the Independent Packing House Workers' union and ordered reinstatement of those on strike except the 154 discharged for cause. The case recalls Fansteel anti sit down strike precedent and notes National Guard action during the 1938 dispute.
