About three hundred high school actors began visits to the University of Iowa campus for the annual Iowa play production festival. Sixty seven schools will be represented during the week and winners will be announced Saturday.
Movie star Wallace Beery has become owner of an Iowa bred Chesapeake dog named L. O. Gaston, a breeder near here. Gaston, who has sold field dogs nationwide, said Beery bought one about two weeks ago and had it shipped by express to the actor.
Mr and Mrs Karl Rose of Waverly and their son Walter of Charles City plan to return to Hanover Germany to settle after selling their Waverly residence. They came to Waverly fifteen years ago and recently took out first citizenship papers. Mr Rose serves as custodian of the Lutheran Mutual Life building.
Mrs. John A. Shreck 70 former Mary Carpenter Craig and dean of women at Drake University died at her Redlands California home after a prolonged illness. She served as dean from 1918 to 1930 during her marriage to Dr. Shreck who had been her first husband’s physician.
Mason City police investigate a shooting when four men and four women in a car driven by Selmer Gresme of Hanlontown were fired upon from a .22 rifle on a graveled highway northeast of Clear Lake. No injuries were reported though the auto was struck and a tire was punctured. Gresme could not identify the assailants.
Advance reservations for nine rooms at Hotel Fort Des Moines were made for Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid of Denmark and their party. Karl Eskelund, chief of press in the Danish foreign office, arrived in Des Moines to complete plans for the April 20 visit.
Interset Mackaburg High School pupils return to classes after a two day strike protesting the removal of Superintendent Russell R Pontius. Students describe the return as temporary while the school board considers further action following a failed settlement at a public meeting.
A 1200 loudspeaker system was placed in operation Monday morning in Des Moines. Senator Claire Dewey of Washington, father of the amplifying system, delivered the first speech over the microphones. The setup includes 27 microphones on the senate floor, one on the president's desk, and two on the secretary's desk.
A series of youth hostels affiliated with the National Youth Hostel association plans to open in Eastern Iowa. Potential sites include Wear Branch, Lake MacBride State Park, Iowa City, Dubuque, Mount Pleasant, Burlington, and Amana. Hostels feature sleeping quarters, dining facilities, recreation rooms, and private quarters for house residents. Members travel by bicycle and carry mem cards for access.
Iowa farm expert Lauren Soth notes Hitler’s absorption of Czechoslovakia and domination of Hungary and Romania has eliminated the Central European market for American farm products. He warns Iowa hog and grain exports will fall as Germany and satellites reduce trade, with shifts away from lard and wheat exports and a need to adjust to new trade realities.
Dr. D C Barrett reports a mild smallpox case in New Haven community. Patient is Mrs A A Richardson, linked to a Missouri visit two weeks prior. Authorities vaccinating exposed contacts and aiming to confine to the household with limited spread hoped.
President Roosevelt endorsed navy plans to build 45000 ton battleships. The White House said two ships are believed approved with congress to be asked to fund them. Secretary Early did not confirm exact numbers. Also note mentions Mr Bill Kerr hosting sister Marcella Welble from Fairfield as a houseguest.
Dr. Barrett cites a smallpox precaution urging vaccination for all eligible. He notes over 800 people were vaccinated in the county recently, while many more should be protected, according to the health director.

Rotary club women dominated the ladies night program last evening exposing husbands flaws in a staged funeral. Husbands faced embarrassment as wives read faults and laid them to rest while men pondered future improved conduct. LeRoy Pratt showed newly shot Mexico trip films after the ceremony as dinner followed at the M C A. President Frank Miller led the meeting and Ed Ralston directed community singing.
Attorney General Fred D Everett has told county attorneys to enforce a broadened gambling law. The statute, amended by the 47th general assembly, includes slot machines and any device with an element of chance. Local officers will cooperate with the attorney general to halt lottery style sales and drawings.
Sam Miller versus Max Waterhouse reached a compromise on the afternoon before jury selection. The defendant agreed to pay $4900 for injuries from an automobile crash. The $10,000 suit was settled with jurors dismissed. next case Ida King versus William Livezey set for Thursday morning.
Washington March 2. The House defeated a bid to curb debate on the $259,000,000 farm parity fund and renewed a contentious talk on the unbudgeted appropriation. Rep Vito Marcantonio of New York sought to trade support for parity funding for Roosevelt’s $150,000.
DES MOINES March 7 The senate voted 27 to 2 to place maintenance employees of the state highway commission under civil service but refused to include other state employees. A civil service board of three appointed by the governor for six year terms will oversee exams, with highway staff currently 1415 employees exempt from salary. Future hires must pass competitive exams. The senate also defeated a move to table the civil service question 21 to 22.
Initiation ceremonies were held at a DeMolay meeting in the Masonia temple. New members include Jack Dunbar of Brighton Homer Herron Wayne Chamberlain Alfred Hosios Charles Sutton William Robertson James Bey and Donald Custer all of Washington with refreshments served by the Mothers Circle after the meeting.
Announcement for a Methodist Church Family Night this Thursday invites church and Buanday school members and friends. A cooperative dinner starts at 6:45 p.m. Bring a covered dish and table service. Program features music readings and an address by Dr. Guy Fansher with a visit by Dr. George Washington Carver.
The 1939 Iowa corn husking contest will be held in Jefferson county. Corn grown for the event will come from farms near Fairfield Batavia and Woolson. Sponsor Arthur T. Thompson says Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and Jefferson county Farm Bureau assist. The Fairfield centennial program will align with the husking journey and the U S Navy band will participate. The event is planned for late October or early November.
The measure on relief funds was blocked, preventing a two hour and twenty minute debate restriction. The discussion remains open as lawmakers challenge procedural limits.
Re-Elected Mayor R. L. Lytle secured a fourth term at the municipal election in Washington. He first took office after the death of Mayor D. J. Rose, serving about six years, then won re election two years later and again this year over O. E. Schmitt by a larger majority.
A revised count from the first ward increases Mayor Lloyd Lytle's lead over O B Schmitt to 330 votes, up from 29. The ward tally now reads Lytle 164, Schmitt 77, with 248 votes cast and two spoiled ballots. The overall city total drops by eleven votes from the previous report.
Twenty five more names were added today to the list of persons who have joined the Chamber of Commerce for this year in the drive for members now going on. The drive continues with renewed activity after a Saturday lapse due to business pressure and a dip in energy yesterday amid city elections. Chairman Ed Haneon and his committee plan to complete the drive today with some later mopping up to reach those not seen initially. The goal is to report a hundred percent membership of Washington business and professional men for the year, an objective being approached today.
Parsons college philharmonic choir will be on the air from station WHO this evening. The program features the ensemble performing selected choral works as announced in today’s notices.
Mayor R L Lytle is re elected to a fourth term with 907 votes to 577 for O Schmitt. Citizens ticket sweeps council and offices including Orr, Lemley, Milek, Lemmon, and Lytle allies across wards. overall turnout 1, 484 votes. Count delayed by voter scratches and heavy post closing calls.
