Gov. George A. Wilson will make his first official appearance at the University of Iowa on May 13 for Governors day. He will review the ROTC regiment of about 1,400 men and is a 1907 graduate of the school.
A fire on the Sam Gardner farm ten miles southeast of town consumed corn, soybeans, hay, and straw while destroying buildings. Damages were about $4,000, with 800 bushels of corn, five tons of soybeans, five tons of baled hay, and one ton of straw lost. Gardner said the buildings were insured.
A municipal airport proposal in Algona failed in Monday's election with 924 votes in favor and 823 against. The plan sought bonds up to 60 000 dollars but did not reach the required 60 percent approval.
Elizabeth Halsey, president of the State University of Iowa, told the Sioux City audience that American physical educators pursue good living rather than winning battles. She spoke at the opening of the Central District Education Association’s four day convention.

Mr and Mrs M L Hughes sob as their 18 month old daughter Nola Jane undergoes surgery to remove both eyes due to glioma. Doctors in Shambaugh and at University Hospital Iowa City say the procedure is necessary to spare her life.
Ronald Sanford the 20 month old son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Sanford has nearly recovered after inhaling a peanut three months ago. Doctors say the peanut remains lodged in the lung wall but the boy has made a complete recovery and will leave the hospital when a convalescent home vacancy opens at the Des Moines Junior League facility.
Near here Hubert Askew, a leading Iowa corn producer, stored 33,990 bushels in one crib and 56,000 bushels in 1928. His farm features a 200 foot long double crib and a 209 foot long single crib, with 940 acres in corn last year and average yields around 53 bushels per acre.
Waterloo. James McDonough, 66, pleaded guilty in district court to obtaining money by false pretenses for allegedly selling a state highway patrol job for 6.65 dollars. He told the judge he had bought into selling political jobs after failing as a salesman and was sentenced to 760 days in jail.
Washington March 29 The full house appropriations committee reported an additional 100 million relief bill for WPA, 50 million below Roosevelt’s request, saying funds on hand plus year to date savings will cover jobless relief through June 30. The panel notes continued congressional economy pressure.
Des Moines March 29 UPI Iowa produced 1 386 000 turkeys in 1938 valued at 3 714 000 ranking fifth among states. Production may rise about 25 percent in 1939 due to improved poult mortality control and feeding. States with higher output include Texas California Minnesota Oklahoma North Dakota and Oregon.
Chairman Mary Nort on introduce an amendment to the wage-hour act including exemption from the 44 hour week for white collar workers paid $200 a month or more. Chairman Thomas will introduce a companion amendment in the senate tomorrow.
Mabel Pierce, 25, of Waterloo died today from injuries suffered in an automobile accident north of the city. The car she rode in with Francis Lohr left the road and crashed into a ditch, about a mile north of Waterloo, after missing a turn.
Washington's Chamber of Commerce reports 168 members for the current year with about 24 names still to be added. Chairman Ed Hanson says 35 new members have joined so far and all past members have renewed. The budget will rise to cover the centennial celebration in August as business support grows.
In Biar, Florida, Geraro Machado, 68, former Cuban president toppled in the August 1933 revolution, died after an operation for a small tumor. He had lived in Miami with his family since last fall amid poor health following exile after his overthrow.
Britain orders its territorial army built to 340000 men as part of wartime preparations. Chamberlain says divisions for overseas service will double and a British expeditionary force is planned to go to France at outbreak of war.
Funeral services were held in Kirksville Missouri for William Henry Darnel father of Delbert Darnel of Washington. He died Sunday at his daughter Mrs. Marion Biggs home after a five month illness from a stroke. He leaves three sons Roy Darnel of Des Moines William Darnel and Mrs. Marion Biggs of Kirksville and Delbert Darnel of Washington.
Winter weather returns to Washington with a damp snowstorm following days of cold. The brief spring like spell is dismissed as a delusion, and warmer temperatures are forecast to melt the accumulation soon.
The Parsons college philharmonic choir tours this week with Iola Dittmer as soloist in Gounod Gallia. The group includes 65 students on two busses and performs 18 appearances, including three radio broadcasts on WHO KFJB and WOC. The tour spans over 1000 miles reaching into Illinois and Chicago destinations.
The county clerk reports no marriage licenses issued for two weeks ending March 29. The last license recorded was March 15, an unusually long gap for this season in the county.

DES MOINES March 29 The Iowa House passed a truck tax bill by 78 to 24 to raise about one million dollars yearly and tighten regulation of motor vehicle carriers. Debate accused farmers of bearing the burden. an amendment exempted farmers from extra registration fees. The bill replaces a ten mile tax on carriers with a gross weight tax from 20 to 240, with exemptions for self use in business.
Ames Iowa experts report the 1939 sealing program barely moves corn prices. Nearly 200 million bushels under seal and local Iowa prices near six cents. Weather and carryover policy will drive prices with a 40 year low planting acreage of about 92 million acres expected.
Judge Frank Beehly ordered Sheriff H M Putnam to inform petit jurors for the March term that their service is not required until Friday morning instead of Thursday. Jurors were told to report at nine Friday. The Kine versus Livesey case remains slated for Friday.

Hollywood March 29 Py Delia Bogard a 17 year old movie actress recently cast opposite Jackie Cooper was slugged on a Hollywood street and critically injured. The assailant is believed to be the same man who killed Russian dancer Anya Sosoyeva on the Los Angeles city college campus last month in an almost identical attack. Bogard's skull was fractured by a heavy wooden club wielded by a tall man in a fray topcoat whose motive was criminal assault.

Mrs. William James of South Second Avenue and East Jefferson Street found a brown coat with stems in her garden south of her home. Floyd Kistler of Rock Island, who had reported losing a coat, had entered the Rucbsam residence nearby and thought it his. Police Chief Jay Brown said the recovered coat is likely his.
