A Waterloo column notes diphtheria cases rising with six reported last week and highlights 2 year old Dell Crow Jr. in critical condition after a glass breathing tube was inserted through his throat at a local hospital. The piece reflects concern over the disease's reach in the area.
Charles Knutson of Thor, son of Mr and Mrs Olaf Knutson, is in serious condition after his younger brother Harold accidentally stabbed him with a pocketknife during play.
Fairfield Verne Matthias age 13 of Birmingham was brought to Jefferson County Hospital with a badly mangled hand after a shotgun discharged accidentally while he hunted. Amputation of several fingers will probably be necessary.
Construction of the Marshall county home and hospital will resume after a 16 week strike over wage disagreements. Kuchara Construction Co. of Des Moines officials said operations would restart but did not disclose settlement terms or whether the original crew will return.
Nancy Corbett, daughter of Mr and Mrs Les Corbett, was elected Little Miss Hollywood at the Ottumwa Junior Chamber of Commerce food show and received a trophy.
Boone residents have won an opportunity to share in a $285,000 estate but do not take the offer seriously. They received letters from a signer in Puebla, Mexico promising one third of the trunked bank bills in a North American customs house if they assist him.
Harold Tucker of Richland backed his car about eight blocks to retrieve his forgotten hat. Sheriff Herbert Goodale of Jefferson County, coming from the opposite direction, forced Tucker to back away to avoid collision and arrested him for driving while intoxicated.
A misdemeanor charge against Osceola City Treasurer O. B. Monroe over a municipal election campaign was dismissed for lack of evidence by Justice J. W. Owens. The charge, filed by W. Poundstone Jackson of the Osceola Warrior, claimed Monroe violated Iowa code banning officials from private interests in public contracts. Monroe is an insurance man.
Cedar Rapids report states Arthur J May 36 head of Manchester branch of Hutchinson Ice Cream Co died from a blood clot after a heart attack. He had worked for the company since 1918 and was widely known in eastern Iowa. Survived by his wife and 8 year old daughter.
Mrs Georgia Sheldon, a western department stores supervisor for Photo Reflex Co of New York, died in the Oklahoma City plane crash. Her parents W R Shepard and Mrs Shepard of Hastings mourn her. She left relatives including four sisters and one brother Jowans and a husband Charles a traveling representative for a St Louis firm.
Early voting began at Municipal election detections in the city with only twenty ballots in the first ninety minutes in the third ward the largest precinct. Returns will be received at the Journal office and by telephone or in person when totals are counted. Polls close at eight. returns from all four wards expected by nine.
Rev. J. F. Leist, Olivet College treasurer and field secretary, will speak Tuesday at 7 30 pm at the Church of the Nazarene on East Jefferson near South Fourth. His talk titled Youth At the Crossroads will draw on his 2300 youth speech experiences across the central west. Special music includes a Kathryn Vacha vocal solo and a Washington high school flute quartet.
A bill introduced in the Iowa legislature proposes a tax ranking from 25 to 500 dollars on chain stores in Des Moines. The measure aims to restructure state business taxation and is presented as a new policy option.
About 1600 to 2000 southeastern Iowa high school pupils will converge on Washington for the sub-district music contest over Thursday through Saturday. Disturbances caused by liquor led to three men appearing before Mayor R L Lytle and Justice J E Boyee. Chester Howard received 15 days in county jail for disturbing the peace after a street fight. Floyd Kistler, found sleeping in a stranger’s bed, paid a $1 fine. John Guthrie was fined 16 and costs for intoxication and property damage. William and Catherine Masson visited the Marson home in town.
A substitute was offered in the Senate after two prior bills stalled. Lawmakers concluded neither bill had a passage chance, prompting the presentation of the new substitute for consideration.
Memorial services for Rev Joseph H O Donnell were announced by Rev H J Corcoran pastor of St James Parish Washington. The service will be at St James church on Wednesday at ten in the morning with Rev M T Gaffney singing and other clergy assisting. He later served in Keokuk and St Francis de Sales church. He was a World War I chaplain and rose to captain. Funeral will be Thursday in Keokuk with Bishop Robiman presiding.

Registration closes tomorrow for seven weekly family health service classes led by Pearl Olson and Alla Hiltunen at Washington county health unit. Classes run Tuesdays from 2 to 4 PM at the YMCA, starting March 21, with enrollment possible at the health unit office or tomorrow afternoon at the YMCA.

The giant flying boat will stop at Azores Lisbon Seville Paris London and Brest on a 4 week maiden voyage to Europe.
Chairman Ed Hanson and a special membership committee resumed their Chamber of Commerce drive today after a Saturday halt due to high shopper traffic. They aim to complete the drive by Tuesday evening and seek to recruit all Washington business and professional men, targeting a 100 percent membership and a larger budget to fund the chamber’s war effort.
