A Cedar Rapids column notes readers at Wilson & Co packing plant begin a strike after accusing officials of violating a five day truce. About 1,400 workers are affected as pickets protest outside with banners demanding union shop and improved conditions and wages.
A bill to legalize collection in advance of interest on small personal loans moved to the house floor. Sponsors say it would expand bank involvement in small lending and reduce need to use loan sharks. Critics argue it could allow up to 14 percent annual interest on loans. The measure would allow banks to lend up to 2500 dollars per borrower with two year installment plans.
Everett La Vera Rhodes formerly of Des Moines is held in Los Angeles California on murder suspicion awaiting an inquest into the death of his wife Mrs Asta Rhodes 25 who was shot while holding her 11 month old son Terry in her arms. The child was uninjured. Rhodes told police the shooting was accidental as he cleaned a pistol. His mother was in the house but did not see the shooting.
Des Moines Iowa senate passed a bill liberalizing salaries for city assessors in Sioux City Cedar Rapids and Waterloo It raises Sioux City and Cedar Rapids salaries from 2500 to 3200 per year Waterloo gets 3000 The three cities deputies see raises from 1000 to 2500 and a potential third deputy may earn 1800 a year.
Speaker Sam Rayburn and Vice President Henry A Wallace signed the seven billion dollar war aid appropriation bill. Arrangements were made to deliver the measure by airplane to President Roosevelt aboard the yacht Potomac off the Florida coast.

Sixteen new cars and trucks were licensed in Washington County in the past week, raising March totals to 39 for three weeks. County Treasurer Marion George reported from Des Moines a check for 57 768.48 the first half of the 1940 homestead credit for Washington County bringing total tax funds needed for 1941 to 252 600.96. January February and March payments reached 194 832.48 with 758 433.53 total taxes paid so far this year. six days remain to pay the first half before interest accrues and 115 536.96 is the total county homestead credit for this year with the remaining half coming from the state next fall.
