Mrs. Larry Fletcher hosts Crawfordsville Community Night sponsored by the Lions Club. She pins a name tag on Mrs. William Conrad while her husband and daughter Gail watch. William Conrad is new to Crawfordsville as a barber.
New residents were honored Monday at the Crawfordsville Lions Club Community Night. About 200 attended as Waco High School music students performed, with local clubs offering acts. Honorees included Everette Boals family, Lakin Hole family, Bill Conrad family, Rev. Tom Hottle family, and others listed.
Tickets available for Mrs McThing presented by Washington High School Drama Club may be exchanged for reserved seat tickets starting March 30 at Phillips Drug. The production runs April 2 and 3 in the Washington High School auditorium. Cast and crew prepare with technical rehearsals as they stage the fantasy comedy noted as a top Broadway play of 1952. Limited tickets remain from Drama Club and junior class members.
Eleven registered Democrats met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Sojka for a Jackson Township pre precinct caucus. Mr. Sojka was elected chair. Mrs. Lloyd Marek secretary. Mrs. Robert Marek and James Redlinger chosen delegates. Resolutions urge bus transportation for all students, income tax relief over sales tax, and keeping the courthouse open until noon Saturdays.
Washington junior chamber of commerce members will run the annual event at 9 a.m. for children ten and under. Richard Horak, chairman, says Sunset Park hosts the hunt with forty prizes to be awarded to participants.
In a stormy session the Iowa Senate voted 38 to 8 to compel James J. Cobb of Des Moines to testify under oath about his letter criticizing a legislative inquiry of the Highway Commission. Governor Hughes urged a speedy probe and vowed action if wrongdoing is found. House debate on permanent reapportionment stalls as caucuses run long with multiple amendments filed.
The YMCA Adult Program Committee offers eight beginner Contract Bridge lessons taught by Mable and Dave Elder. Sessions run Mondays at 8 p.m. from April 6 through May 25 with a 15-table limit and fees of six dollars for individuals or ten dollars for couples. Register via Bob Gillesby or the YMCA desk.
The YMCA announces a new series of semi private swimming lessons starting Monday March 30 at 5 p m and Wednesday April 1 at 4 p m The advanced class is for children who can swim 20 feet or more Each six week session ends May 4 and 6 with six lessons per class limited to 12 students for boys and girls aged 5 6 or 7 the fee is 4 for the series.
Registration for gun safety classes offered here will be completed this evening. Boys are urged to meet at the armory at 7 30 this evening for plans and preliminary details as the series of instruction begins soon.
A two story steel quonset building owned by Joel Yoder in Kalona burned early Tuesday. The loss included three sows and 20 pigs, plus an automobile, tractor and boat. Fire officials say the blaze started on the second floor due to faulty breeding equipment. alarms came at 1 30 a.m. and fire crews stayed until 6 a.m.
Funeral services for Weller Snyder 76 of Kalona will be Saturday March 28 at 2 p m in the Kalona Methodist Church with Rev George Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Hill Cemetery. The Peterseim Funeral Home handles arrangements as the body arrives from California. Snyder born December 13 1887 in Kalona was married in 1908 to Blanche Snair and ran a Kalona business until retirement. He is survived by his wife a son Dr Dean Snyder of San Diego two sisters and three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Lola A. Lambert 65 of Columbus City died early today in Restopia. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. in Columbus City Methodist Church, Rev Robert Parris officiating. Burial in Columbus City Cemetery. She was born December 22, 1898 near Columbus City and was married to Charles E. Carter December 25, 1915. Surviving are a daughter Leis Hubrey of Columbus City, two grandchildren, and two brothers Noah Carter of Paradise California and Charles of Davenport. Funeral home Stacy is handling arrangements.
In Jacksonville Florida dozens of Negro high school students battled police overturning and burning a car as the city reeled from a day of white and Negro violence. A Negro woman died from a gunshot as 127 demonstrators were arrested and authorities restored calm by early morning.
Mrs. Ella M. DeMaranville Reed, 88, died Monday night March 23 1964 at 108 East Second Street. Funeral at Jones Funeral Home led by Rev Theodore Schwartz. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by six children, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, a sister, and many in-laws.
Supt John V Phlieger said Washington Community School District students will be dismissed Thursday at the usual time and enjoy a Spring vacation through Wednesday. No classes Friday Monday or Tuesday. Third nine week period ended and report cards go home tomorrow.
Weather by United Press International reports a cold wave warning for the north and west of Iowa with snow tonight and Wednesday. Colder air affects the extreme east tonight, with moderate easterly winds causing blowing and drifting snow. Lows tonight near 10 to 20 and highs Wednesday in the teens. Thursday outlook favors fair to cloudy skies with diminishing snow in the southeast and persistently cold conditions.
The Iowa House begins debate on a 59 seat Senate and 112 member House reapportionment plan as part of a federal court–driven redistricting dispute. The proposal creates 53 districts with 46 two county maps and seven populous counties as single county districts.
