Des Moines reports both chambers push to end the 1972 session with adjournment seen tonight. Senate leaders hope to wrap up as House adjourns for the day. a GMC building funding dispute and a conference committee blocked final adjournment.
Lawmakers bartered on a trio of measures as a conference stalemate persisted. A billboard junkyard control bill must pass by March 31 to secure federal highway funds. auxiliary services for private students split House and Senate. county school systems face study while broader session actions moved, including bingo amendment placement, county home advisory board, industrial revenue bonds, snowmobile regulations, safety standards alignment, building code funding, swine brucellosis control, and a $2.4 million push to finish the educational television network by 1975 with Sesame Street airings to underserved areas.
Washington physician Dr. G E Montgomery will join Jim Wick on the Open Line program over WMT radio from 9 10 to 10 p m. The discussion will tackle the national controversy over cholesterol levels and health.
Edward Mezvinsky of Iowa City will join Democratic fundraisers in Jefferson and Washington Counties on Friday evening. The First District congressional hopeful will speak at a 6 p.m. smorgasbord fundraiser at the Fairfield American Legion Hall and then attend a Washington potluck at Wanda Smith’s home. The attorney and former state legislator seeks the Democratic nomination.
Mayor Ralph Martin announced two enforcement warnings. Cars left parked overtime must be moved to reduce a nuisance. All dogs must be penned or leashed at all times, even if licensed, with fines possible under a nuisance ordinance for loose animals.
Washington County residents lacking a high school diploma may enroll in a Kirkwood Community College GED program. Coordinator Phil Rusley will arrange registration through him or CAP Center at 653-2853. Classes meet Tuesdays at 6 30 p.m. at Washington High School. Mary Heaton organized the outreach. Transportation help is available through CAP Center.
United Press International reports continuing cold in eastern Iowa with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. Friday brings cloudy skies with western regions brighter by afternoon and highs from the upper 40s to mid 50s in the south.
UPI reports the February cost of living up 0.5 percent, the sharpest one month jump since last summer, driven by a 1.7 percent seasonally adjusted rise in food prices including meat. The report notes broader effects on telephone and electric services and women’s apparel, with ongoing policy debate over inflation and farm prices.
Weathersfield Police Chief Robert Gale chased a burglary suspect into a woods near Claremont New Hampshire. He tripped over a frightened skunk halting the pursuit as the suspect fled. Gale later sought a lift and returned to a vacant station, his uniform airing out.
The Washington Community School District approved a moderate pay raise for the 1972 73 year at a special meeting. Base salary rises to 6950 from 6850 with about a 3.87 percent average increase. Health insurance steps up to 111 a year with the district covering full premium for single coverage, but a 12360 ceiling may require teachers to cover excess. The board also set pay scales for all district employees and met privately to evaluate personnel.
About $600 in money and household goods were stolen from the Elwyn Corey farm home three miles south of Washington. The burglary was found when the Coreys returned about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Entry was through a basement door. Six radios, two watches, a 20 gauge shotgun, a .22 Winchester, $50 to $60 in cash, credit cards and travelers checks were missing. A desk was overturned and the house appeared to have been searched. Sheriff's officers investigate.
George Meany Floyd Smith and I W Abel resign from the federal Pay Board drawing criticism from lawmakers. The White House says the walkout will not derail wage price controls as Nixon weighs replacements and aims to keep the inflation fight credible with 13.5 million workers no longer represented.
Washington High School students earned five Division I and two Division II ratings in the state speech contest held at Fairfield under the Iowa State Speech Association. Carmen Griggs accompanied the group. Division I awarded to Nancy Rhea Mike Schooley Susan Vacha in interpretative prose John Marie in radio news Ellen Wiggers in expository declamation. Division II went to Melinda Pacha and John Sobaski in oratorical declamation.
Old Man Winter returns as spring weather stalls across the Great Lakes Ohio Valley and northern New England. Sault Ste. Marie Michigan Beckley West Virginia Binghamton New York report snow and winds up to 30 mph while Rumford Maine sees over an inch of rain in six hours. Cold air chills the region with teens in the morning and showers spread to the Northwest and southern New Mexico.
