Washington County sheriff's officers investigated a Tuesday night break-in at Kerm's D X in Ainsworth. Entrance was gained by breaking a glass in the front door. About fifty dollars in cash and change from the pop cooler were missing.
Groundbreaking ceremonies are planned at 10 30 a m March 29 at the site of the new addition to Pleasantview Home in Kalona. The unit will include a nursing care section and is sponsored by the Mennonites of the area.
Dorothy Houghton, 82, a national affairs advocate and Iowa’s 1949 Most Distinguished Citizen, died Tuesday in Red Oak. She served on the State Board of Regents from 1939 to 1951 and was Iowa Mother of the Year in 1948. Funeral services will be Thursday at the First Congregational Church in Red Oak. she was survived by four sons. her husband Hiram died ten years ago.
Dennis James Fortune 19 of Morningside died in a Des Moines County crash one mile east of Mediapolis when his car failed to pass two vehicles and struck a tree. Passenger David Hazen of Mount Union was treated and released for injuries.
McDonalds attorney said he would file suit to recover 14250 paid for Big Mac the steer dethroned last week as grand champion at the 1972 National Western Stock Show. Defendants would include Rex Miller 16 Alta Iowa and Eldon Miller. The money was held by Colorado State Branch Commissioner Earl Brown after questions about the steer’s legitimacy.
Arnold Krueger Jr. age 29 of Letts died at the scene after his car was forced off a Muscatine County road by an oncoming vehicle. George P. Townsley, 31, also of Letts, said he was blinded by headlights and lost control. Townsley was treated for injuries and released.
Congressman Fred Schwengel announced plans to visit Washington County on Friday March 24. He will dine at the Captain's Table at 6 15 PM with local residents followed by a public coffee at 8 00 PM. Schwengel is seeking a ninth term in the U S House of Representatives.
Clear to partly cloudy and continued cold tonight with lows in the 20s to around 32. Thursday brings partly cloudy skies in the east and mostly sunny and warmer conditions in the west with highs from the lower 40s in the east to the lower 60s in the southwest.
The National Commission on Marijuana urges confinement of use to the home and discouragement of public use while keeping criminal controls on production and distribution. It backs decriminalization for private possession and outlines fines for public possession of small amounts and harsher penalties for larger amounts or distribution.
The Iowa Senate voted 26 to 23 to approve a constitutional amendment removing bans on lotteries and games of chance. The measure advances to the November ballot, amid fierce debate about morality, gambling, and government authority.
Thousands of additional South Vietnamese troops entered eastern Cambodia to retake ground along Highway 7. Gen. Nguyen Van Minh said the drive began late Tuesday with infantry, rangers, armor and artillery. Casualties and clashes were reported among both sides, including four infantrymen killed by a mine near Pleiku and U.S. air support backing Vietnamese forces.
The Senate Agriculture Committee advanced a far reaching rural development measure by 10 to 1. It calls for 730 million in grants including 500 million in revenue sharing and creates a 2 billion dollar borrower owned credit system with 200 million annually for ten years. The plan targets communities under 50 000 and their suburbs with broad grant programs.
Iowa landowners signed up 84 percent of farms in the 1972 Feed Grain Program. Total set aside tops 3.9 million acres, about 31 percent of the feed grain base on signed farms. Prospective planting intentions show national declines of 8 percent for corn and 7 percent for soybeans as of March 1, 1972.
Sen Edmund Muskie secures a solid Illinois primary victory with about 63 percent of the vote over Eugene McCarthy, while Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley suffers setbacks as his preferred candidates for Cook County state’s attorney and governor trail. Edward Hanrahan wins decisively for state’s attorney. Daniel Walker leads Paul Simon in the gubernatorial race, signaling Daley’s weakened grip on Illinois politics.
A group of a dozen Democratic senators led by Gaylord Nelson introduced a bill to close 21 tax loopholes and raise taxes on high earners by 16 billion dollars. They propose directing the revenue to aid low and middle income families to ease rising property taxes. President Nixon favors property tax relief potentially via a value added tax.
