Joe H. Jones of 718 South Ninth Avenue Washington announced he is weighing a run for state representative in the August 1, 1972 primary. He plans a formal declaration after district boundaries are set by the supreme court.
Willis Don Pearson an 18 year old rural Washington youth was fined 150 dollars on three charges after a Sunday night high speed chase by city police. Pearson drove a pickup at speeds up to 100 mph for about eight miles before overturning on a county gravel road four and a half miles northeast of Washington. Pearson suffered minor injuries while passenger Harry Knott of Washington was uninjured. Pearson paid 100 dollars for reckless driving 25 dollars for illegal possession of beer and 25 dollars for failing to stop for an emergency vehicle.
Randall Allen Johnson twenty of Washington appeared in Washington County District Court on a possession of marijuana charge and was released on a thousand dollar bond. He was arrested after a farmer reported him picking up a bag on a gravel road and officers confiscated over one pound of suspected marijuana worth about three hundred dollars. Sheriff Don Robertson and Deputy Glen Murphy made the arrest under the 1971 Uniform Controlled Substance Act with possible penalties up to six months in jail or a one thousand dollar fine or both.
Rain showers end by evening with partial clearing and colder temperatures. Lows around 30 to the upper 30s, then Wednesday brings mostly sunny skies with highs from the lower 50s in the northeast to the lower 60s in the southwest.
The court ruled 6-1 that long residency requirements violate the right to vote and suggested 30 days as adequate. Justice Marshall said a year or six months is too long. Blackmun concurred with caveats. Burger dissented. The decision notes 24 states require a year, 23 have 180 days or six months, and three use 90 days or three months.

Government troops seize 613 tons of rice, 112 tons of rice and 22 tons of salt found at a Cambodian cache.
Iowa House finalizes a bill creating a Department of Environmental Quality to consolidate air and water pollution controls, solid waste, and agriculture chemical oversight, with rural opposition over keeping agriculture chemistry under agriculture. The measure passes House 50 46 and Senate 34 14, sent to the governor.
Gary Wagner has accepted a call to be pastor at The First Baptist Church of Sac City Iowa. He is a Washington Iowa native, married to Pat Bailey of Casper Wyoming, and they expect to move to Sac City around July 1. Wagner is seminary trained with studies at Colgate Rochester and others. ordination is planned June 25 in Washington Iowa.
Kirkwood Community College will hold a public program March 28 in Ainsworth from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the town hall. George Maybanks will present information on full and part time vocational training adult evening classes and the college’s adult education offerings to residents of Merged Area Ten.
The Washington City Council approved selling 340000 dollars in water revenue bonds to the Carlton D Beh Company of Des Moines at a 20 year maturity and 4.9674 percent interest rate described as very favorable. The panel also renewed Captain's Table beer license and State Cafe cigarette permit. A land purchase for a future park from Kenneth Davison was tabled. Public Works director Reschly reported buying a tractor backhoe post hole digger and equipment at a Delhi auction two weeks prior.
