A Hillsdale County civil defense director and 87 co-eds watched a hovering unidentified flying object settle in a swamp near a college dormitory Monday night. William van Horn observed the object for three hours through binoculars as thunderstorms lashed the area. The prior night dozens of police and about 40 others reported a similar sighting near Ann Arbor. The Air Force asked Dr. H Allen Hynek to lead a formal investigation from Selfridge Air Force Base.

Killed in Viet Nam Private First Class Friese dies in action
Private First Class Willard John Friese age 19 died in Viet Nam on March 21 1966, the first Washington County soldier killed in the war. A 1965 Washington High School graduate, he joined the Marine Corps after graduation and was wounded at Phu Bai before his death. Survived by parents, siblings, and grandmother, funeral arrangements through Jones Funeral Home are pending.

Tornado hits near North English Iowa farm
A spring tornado touched down on the Vernon Miller farm five miles southwest of North English, Iowa, destroying multiple turkey sheds and a cattle shed and damaging corn cribs. No injuries were reported though 4,000 turkeys were housed nearby. Miller was asleep at 1 p.m. when the shed was torn away and neighbors described a funnel sighting.
