Soviet nuclear subs near U.S. coast threaten cities

UPI reports the Soviet Union now has at least one nuclear missile sub on station in both the Atlantic and Pacific at all times. With 45 nuclear subs overall and 10 ballistic missile boats, Moscow could place subs within range of American coastal population centers within two to three days, potentially matching U.S. Polaris forces. The fleet includes 75 diesel subs with missiles. The United States maintains an ongoing anti-submarine program to counter the threat, costing over $2 billion annually.

Hughes faces GOP charge over 1965 tax refunds

Gov. Harold E. Hughes returned from the Trade Mission to hear a GOP attack on double taxation. A Iowa Taxpayers Relief Committee leader urged a special session to rescind or refund 1965 personal income taxes due in 1966. A GOP attorney general candidate touted a plan to refund all 1965 taxes. The dispute centers on withholding 1966 taxes and the state surplus, with Democrats denying an oversized surplus and defending the withholding system.

Inauguration of ISU president set for Tuesday

ISU officials plan the inauguration of Dr. W. Robert Parks as the 11th president. A 10:15 a.m. ceremony at the Iowa State Armory will be followed by a 2:30 p.m. reception in the Memorial Union. Joseph H. Parks of Georgia and Dr. Paul F. Sharp of Drake will attend representing their institutions. Dr. Parks succeeds Dr. James H. Hilton, who retired last July.

Russians test second underground nuke in five weeks

In Semipalatinsk, Soviet Central Asia, a powerful underground nuclear explosion occurred Sunday, rated 6.4 on the Richter scale and linked to work on a warhead for a massive rocket. Western experts noted it matched the intensity of a Feb. 13 blast and cited U.S. seismic observations.

Five U.S. planes lost as Marines fight in Vietnam fronts

UPI reports heavy U.S. Marine combat on two fronts in Vietnam. Five American planes including the Skyknight electronic countermeasure jet were lost, with at least 46 Viet Cong killed in ground fighting and about 150 more by air in Operation Texas. Other clashes near Hue and An Hoa yielded dozens of enemy deaths. B52 raids supported operations Silver City and, in bad weather, 24 bombing missions hit targets in North Vietnam.

Astronauts Fly Home From Cape Kennedy Reunion

Neil Armstrong and David Scott flew from Cape Kennedy to Houston for a reunion with families and reports on their Gemini 8 near disaster. They departed at 9 23 a m EST aboard a Gulfstream jet and aimed to land near Ellington Air Force Base at 2 12 p m EST. Armstrong said it’s back to the office to write reports as Alan Shepard and nurse Dolores O'Hara accompanied them.

Charges filed in Waterloo shooting

Waterloo police charged Eddie Denton 31 with intent to do great bodily harm after a shooting at his wife’s home in Waterloo early Sunday. James Earl Booker 26 was shot in the thigh by an automatic 380 pistol and hospitalized.
