Des Moines Mrs. Harriette G. McCullough state president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union said the organization would back local option bills on liquor sales. She emphasized local control over saloon policy and urged support for measures allowing communities to decide liquor laws locally.
In Des Moines, two youths ages around 10 and 13 pulled a green coaster wagon to Grimstead Service, rifling the cash register for about $30 before proprietor W Bb Grimstead stepped outside. The incident highlights a petty theft at a local service station.
After 24 hours of deliberation a district court jury was dismissed in the case brought by Peter Weisz, formerly of Clarion, against Emmetsburg hotel man J H Moore for alleged malicious prosecution in a $10,000 damage suit.
In Knoxville on the first day of spring Ethelyn Reed and Irene Caswell found snow on the ground despite warm weather. They rolled a big snowball and joked about the season’s mixed up mood as the day began.

Dr. Clifford C. Bacon of Marshalltown will become pastor of First Methodist church in Des Moines succeeding Dr. James Brett Kenna. Kenna, who led the Des Moines church from 1928 until his resignation effective February 15, leaves to take the post at University Temple Methodist Episcopal church in Seattle.
New London Superintendent W. Shaw testifies in the military court of inquiry into the worst U S school tragedy, admitting involvement in tapping a wet gas main for school heating without Parade Oil Co permission. He says a warning against the change was given in January. his son died in the blast.
The Iowa House refused to establish a separate state safety department today, but the idea was injected into a motor vehicle code revision bill. The vote was 28 against and 24 for the amendment, with Stewart of Washington voting no. The department would remain under the secretary of State unless the new amendment creates a state safety department overseeing the state bureau of investigation and highway patrol.
A large Saturday declamatory contest brought 30 contestants from Washington county rural schools to Washington High School. Six divisions produced multiple winners led by Esther Stewart Living Lake Jackson township and Donald Hines Pleasant Plain Jackson. Other names include Shirley Ann Leitchty Stringtown and Victor Flynn No 6 Seventy Six, with many runners up across divisions.
Frank B. Miller of the Iowa Southern Utilities warns Washington boys to keep kites away from electric lines and to avoid using wire as string. He cautions never to touch hanging wires or climb poles, recalling a local woman’s death when she grabbed a loose wire.

Company workers who had been on a similar strike returned to their jobs today, ending a local wage dispute and resuming normal operations at the facility.
Dr. William H. Phelps of Des Moines opens a Holy Week series at United Presbyterian Church in Washington with a sermon titled A Monument to a Donkey. He uses the Colorado memorial to discuss Palm Sunday and the lost in Luke, followed by a week of afternoon and evening talks through Easter.
A. D. Worthington will discuss grasshopper and chinch bug in the county. The meeting, led by County Agent William J. Roudabush, is set for Thursday March 25 at 2 PM in the G A R hall at the court house. All residents are urged to attend.
Nine superior ratings, seven excellent, and three good earned by Washington high school musicians at Mt Pleasant sub district music contest. Superior solos and groups qualify for the district contest April 9 and 10. Read lists include trombone solo David Pearson and ensembles Ruth Dupuis Maxine Allen Tommy Gray Margaret Snyder Frances Hayes etc. Includes mixed chorus glee clubs bands orchestra and string quartet.
Petition forms opposing the president's Supreme Court plans were placed in many business houses in Washington County last week. A nonpartisan group announced that a large majority of citizens in the county oppose the proposals and they urged signatures from interested residents.
Washington March 22 Chief Justice Hughes said increasing the number of supreme court justices would impair efficiency. He stated the court acts as a unit and more judges would slow decisions. Hughes noted Brandeis and Vandeventer concur with him and did not address age limits.
Funeral services are set for Tuesday afternoon at 2:15 for Mrs. Maggie Horsey who died Sunday afternoon at 438 East Van Buren Street from a heart ailment. Dr. F W Eastwood will officiate at the Presbyterian church service followed by burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Surviving relatives include a daughter Cloyee Horsey of Washington and a grandson David Horsey with several nieces nephews and siblings.
A. M. Mullen died Saturday and will be buried today at the Johnson funeral chapel in Ottumwa. The notice lists the burial location and timing for the family and community to attend.
