Nearly 62 000 passengers have been transported 4 560 000 miles by the University of Iowa hospital ambulances in five years. Initiated by Robert K. Neff in April 1932, the program started with two cars and now operates 19. About 1 000 people are taken daily, five per car, saving thousands in state transportation costs.
Mrs H Houghton of Red Oak Iowa state president of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs visited the Hoover birthplace to present a pound of soil for use at the Pennsylvania spring convention of federated women. A “constitution tree” will be planted in Philadelphia with soil from historic spots in various states, symbolizing the federation. Mrs S L Jeffries, president of the Centerdale Women's Club, sent the Iowa soil for the planting ceremony.
Four seventh grade girls from the University School study speech and social poise under guidance of Mrs. Hunton D. Sellman. They work on gestures voice and manner to improve behavior in various social situations and meet each Saturday afternoon.
Iowa report shows February permits up from January with a $342 909 gain in construction values and 355 more permits year to year. The first two months of 1937 show improved valuations while Waterloo did not report. Twelve large cities noted a February increase over January with overall gains.
Oskaloosa and many Iowa schools are set to compete in the National Forensic League district tournament at Penn College on March 25 and 26. Thirteen departments of the Industrial Science Division will offer exhibits and demonstrations at the fifth annual Science Day on April 10. Nearly 1,500 high school students, parents and teachers are expected to attend.
Mrs. Caroline Roudabush aged 75 died yesterday afternoon at four at the Newton home of her daughter Mrs. Grace Bachman. She was mother of County Agent W. J. Roudabush. Funeral plans call for services at the Brookside Iowa home with burial there. She had arthritis and had lived in Newton with her daughter after moving from Washington.
Amelia Earhart and her crew escaped serious injury when the silver plane failed to maintain control after takeoff at Luke Field Honolulu. The craft blew a right front tire, swerved, and turned over after traveling about 1 000 feet en route to Howland Island on her around the world flight.
Washington boys quartet and girls sextet both earned superior ratings in the sub-district music contest at Mt Pleasant, with Fairfield Fort Madison Burlington also scoring high. Lois Humble won superior in soprano. Burlington Mediapolis and Washington tied for superior in that event. Other schools posted a range of excellent good or average ratings across solo and ensemble events.
About 6,000 workers occupying eight Chrysler plants issued a defiant letter to Governor Frank Murphy. They warned state troops could be used to eject them and vowed to protect their rights with their lives, urging a negotiated settlement to avoid bloodshed.
Paris prepares for a seven day tense period as police go on emergency duty for tomorrow’s events. Six victims of a riot between communists and fascists are to be buried, and a five mile funeral procession will draw about 500000 workers from the red belt to the graves.
In Overton Texas officials report 397 dead from the New London school disaster as mass funerals proceed. A court of inquiry led by Major Gaston Howard meets in the intact grammar building while martial law is lifted later today.
Heavy snow blanketed Washington county as the 7 season nears, with visible snowfall at morning and partial melt by noon. Drivers struggled, highway crews led by Engineer Russell Frink cleared routes, and officials noted the moisture would aid spring planting conditions.
The annual union holy week services gather at United Presbyterian church with Bible study hours at 2:20 and 2:30 p m starts on Sunday. Churches including Presbyterian United Methodist Baptist Christian Evangelical and Four Square join to host Dr William H Phelps of Des Moines guiding daily meditations on the life of Christ and daily chapters of Philippians.
