Osceola W D Slone 65 who delivered mail from depot to post office here was killed early Monday when his horse and wagon were struck by a State highway commission truck driven by William Barnett of Ames. Survived by his wife five children five sisters and three brothers.
Iowa City reports 481 A.S.T.P. trainees, about one third of the 1,500, will remain on the University of Iowa campus after next Monday. Col. Luke D. Zech, commandant, says departure of the rest for active duty comes sooner than expected. Remaining trainees will be advanced engineers, dental, medical and pre professional cadets, and reserves. quarters for these units have not been arranged.
Dora Muncho vec a 16 year old farm youth will plead self defense in the slaying of his stepfather Paul Voss 41 Ren Wieck farmer on January 8. A jury selection began with 22 prospective jurors examined before District Judge G W Stillman. A special panel of 260 was ordered to report after requests for release by farmers left 36 of the original 76 members.
Hudson welcomed Dr. C. O. Grimes of Leon as he opened a new office on Monday after the town had been without a physician since last summer when Dr. J. W. Donnell left due to ill health.
Selection of a jury was completed Monday in the Shenandoah case of John Davis charged with robbery in the home of Miss Jennie Maxwell, 56. Maxwell says two men and a woman bound and gagged her last May 14 and tried to steal $23,000 in currency sewn into her petticoat.

If yields match the 5 year average, corn production could reach about 620 million bushels.

Seven Washington county residents depart for Camp Dodge this morning to be inducted into the army. The group includes Dillon B. Schantz Sam C. Simmering Boyd E. White Harry Anderson and William A. Malloy of Washington John F. Walker of Ainsworth Harold Dean Tadlock of Wellman and they are among March inductees. John Thomas Russell of Kalona leaves for Des Moines to join the navy after pre induction exams.

He argued that true world rule comes from ideas, not armies or ships, and urged the Atlantic Charter four freedoms to move from paper to hearts. Funeral services for Mrs J K R Lease of Crawfordsville will be held at 2 30 Wednesday afternoon at the Crawfordsville Methodist church. Rev Fredrick Westbrook will officiate and burial will be in Crawfordsville cemetery.
George Baker assumed the captaincy of Washington headquarters company in the Iowa State Guard after receiving his commission. He succeeds Howard Miller who resigned after two years as captain. Lt. Col. C. R. Christ oversaw the transfer at the armory. Rodney Kephart remains first lieutenant as the unit lacks a second lieutenant to replace Rodney Arnold who also resigned. Alvin Rommel declined the second lieutenant post. The company, now 50 strong, seeks 26 more to reach a roster of 60.
Judge P J Siegers opened the March term but announced no criminal or civil cases would be heard this week. Grand and petit jurors were told not to report and may be recalled later. A divorce suit was filed by Edna Mae McClure against Elmer Barr McClure seeking a decree and custody of two minor children.
Harold E. Stassen, former Minnesota governor, not seeking the Republican nomination, but would accept if nominated. He sent a letter via official channels from the south Pacific where he serves on Admiral Halsey’s staff. He would retire from active duty briefly to discuss future issues if nominated.
Carl W Danielson, field supervisor for the Farm Credit Administration, will be in Washington to discuss program oversight and agricultural credit issues with regional officials. He plans meetings with lenders and farmers to review farm loan policies and repayment options.
Mrs. Charlotte Lins received word from Washington about an intercepted German shortwave broadcast naming her husband 2nd Lt. Warren Ellis Lins as a prisoner of war. The Red Cross asked for 20 men to fill a demand tied to the incident, with East Coast correspondents reporting Friday’s broadcast.
Mrs Charles Strothman and her young son John travel from New London to Fargo North Dakota to visit Doris Maxwell formerly of Washington and Clyde Maxwell. Verl Maxwell works with the Office of Defense Transportation in Fargo.

Iowa led with 444 000 000 eggs for February 1944. The War Food Administration has bought dried eggs for lend lease and institutions to absorb the surplus.
