Farm home destroyed by midafternoon fire near Colum bus Junction
A large farm home occupied by the Robert J Barnes family between Columbus Junction and Letts was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon. The cause was undetermined and firemen from Columbus Junction Letts and Grandview battled the blaze as the occupants Mr and Mrs Barnes escaped with no contents saved.

Funeral services for Edith Shields will be held Saturday at 2 p m at Sherman Eden Funeral Home. Rev Clarence Dehne will preside with Dr W R Yard assisting. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Shields, born October 17 1878 in Washington, died March 17 1965 after two years of ill health. She taught in local schools 1918 to 1948 and belonged to First Presbyterian Church PEO and the YWCA. Survivors include her brother Dr James M Shields of Denver and nephews Robert Shields of Washington and William Shields of Grand Rapids.

Juveniles linked to $1,000 Stillman’s burglary
Four juveniles arrested in Burlington, Iowa, allegedly stole 22 wrist watches, eight transistor radios, and coins from vending machines in Stillman’s Department Store in Muncie. The youths were in a car possibly stolen in Muncie and faced custody arrangements as police planned to retrieve them. Entry appeared to require loosening bars embedded in cement at a second floor window. Clothing and damaged cash registers were found among the scattered goods.

United Press International reports blizzard conditions in Iowa eased to a dull roar as snowbound towns began digging out. Highs ranged from 10 to 20, with readings 12 to 18 degrees below normal.
