Des Moines column notes Iowa’s general fund balance may fall to about seven million dollars by July 1, 1945. Comptroller C Fred Porter says seven million is ample working balance and over five million is sufficient. He cites loss of real estate tax revenue and expects other revenues to taper off, with millions under state control outside the general fund.
John Wilkens of Waverly died after a team he drove bolted when frightened by whistles. He was found unconscious and died en route to a hospital. Services will be Monday.
Strawberry Point resident and former Iowa state senator Ron W. Newberry, 90, died Friday at his home. A lawyer, he served 1904-08 and 1917-24, chaired the public schools committee for five sessions, helped pass Iowa’s first pure food and seed laws, and served on the Better Iowa Schools Commission and the state conservation board.
Howard V. Gregory of Des Moines told Iowa Flight Operators that five thousand private planes could fly in the state if postwar aviation grows. He urged cheap durable planes and adequate airport facilities, plus simplification of CAA regulations for private flying expansion.
Iowa’s June primary will have few candidates as of the filing deadline. Secretary of State Wayne Ropes lists 47 nominees: 21 Democrats and 26 Republicans, far below 83 two years ago. Governor Hickenlooper seeks the U S Senate Republican nomination unopposed, with only one Democrat running for each state office. Rex Nelson did not file to oppose Hickenlooper, and Ernest J. Seemann challenges Senator Guy M. Gillette for re nomination on the Democratic ticket.
Robert Acheson lifelong Ainsworth native moved to Washington last fall died suddenly at 7 30 pm while en route to a Red Cross benefit basketball game near Randolph Kelsey home. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home Monday at 2 pm with local and area pastors. Burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. He was born December 5 1845 to A D and Esther Duncan Acheson. He married Katherine Merrow September 26 1900 and lived on farms near Ainsworth before moving to 303 West Jefferson Washington. He served as elder in Ainsworth United Presbyterian Church and was a township trustee in Oregon Township. He is survived by wife and one sister Mrs James Clegg of Ainsworth. siblings Charles Johnson and William I Acheson are deceased.
American 4 engine bombers from Britain launched a daytime assault on axis Europe marking the 8th air force’s first heavy raid since Thursday. The raid followed earlier nuisance attacks on western Germany and preceded the 15th air force raid on Vienna. Twin engined RAF Mosquitoes returned from western Germany after likely striking armament factories.
Chairman S W Easter of the Legion committee reports Virginia Beenslonsom of Washington High School has donated 81 records, the most in the drive to repurpose old phonographs. Several others contributed large numbers as the collection moves toward a April 1 target to fill Army Navy and Marine needs, with a candy prize for the top contributor.
The American Legion to meet next Tuesday evening at another city hall with E. E. Ward in charge of the program. Out of town entertainment is planned but not yet announced.
Des Moines dispatch notes Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl, Iowa selective service director, urges amending the 1887 constitution to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 after observing many youths under 21 serving in World War II. He argues 18-year-olds have earned the franchise through defense duties, while questioning the maturity argument.
Dr Frank Oran Pershing a Keota physician for thirty years died at his home at 6 30 am He retired in 1941 and had been ill a week Funeral arrangements are by Marsh funeral home He was born Nov 3 1877 in Hancock County Illinois and practiced medicine from Keota after moving from Crescent City Illinois He and wife Winifred Iray had one son Orville who died in 1921 He is survived by wife and brother Dr R S Pershing of El Paso Texas.
There will be no child health conference at the Washington County health unit office on Tuesday afternoon March 28.
Washington Civil Air Patrol appeals for twenty earphone head sets for Air Cadets in training. Sets loaned will be used in radio code classes under Paul Wolfe instruction and returned in good condition. Those with sets should contact Dan Brindley or Harold Mangold.
Rain fell last evening and overnight turned to snow by morning with a light covering. By afternoon the sky cleared and fair weather returned, ending a brief wintry spell.
Washington county reports Red Cross contributions totaling 3,523.30 with most funds from Washington town. Rural districts and other areas begin to report as solicitors finish canvassing, while groups like Grace Hill Grace Church aid contribute 15 dollars. The drive aims for 16,700 with gains expected by early next week as county canvassing expands.
Mrs. Charlotte Lins received a telegram from Washington signed by the Foreign Broadcast Intelligence service of the FCC. It states 2nd Lieutenant Warren Ellis Lins has been mentioned in an enemy broadcast as a prisoner in German hands and notes the army is checking the claim and will advise when confirmed.
Soviet forces under Ivan S. Konev pressed toward the Dniester river border of Bessarabia on a 40 mile front with the 1st Ukrainian army nearing Lwow. The red advance, reported from Moscow, saw over 150 towns and villages fall as two towns 10 miles from the Dniester were seized, while German troops retreated to southwest banks and communications were severed between German forces in Ukraine.
Lt. John M. Hendley of Columbia on duty with the Marines in the Southwest Pacific writes to his family that he is commanding 28 men.
American troops tightened hold on Admiralty islands capturing Lorengau airport and nearing the town. British forces landed behind Japanese lines in north central Burma to drive them out as U S fliers harassed Japanese communications. Allied aircommando engineers built strips 150 miles behind lines for C 47 transports while Brit ish and Indian troops prepared a new offensive. The Japanese setback at Bougainville was reported as Allied forces restored a perimeter on the Solomons beachhead. Pacific forces also hit Soerabaja and other eastern bases in a wide Pacific air and naval offensive.
Allied air power bombed German positions around the Anzio beach head near Rome as New Zealand troops pressed in Cassino. The attack, described as one of the campaign's heaviest in the sector, aimed to break the stalemate and follow earlier Cassino destruction.
