Miss Wynette Shade, 16, was killed in a collision at a downtown intersection. The drivers were Robert Lewis Farlin, 18, and Robert Edward Harpin, 17. Farlin’s passenger Misa Shade, 16, was thrown clear and crushed beneath the 1931 Ford coupe.
Carl Weeks reports Iowa raised 2 525244 dollars for the national war fund, finishing third in per cent of quota. Contributions exceeded the state quota by 18 per cent and equaled about a collar a person. Only Oregon and North Dakota surpassed Iowa in per capita giving, and Iowa allowed counties to keep surplus funds for future quotas.
Meteorologist T G Shipann reports little chance of Mississippi flooding in Davenport though the river rose to 11.1 feet from rain over 48 hours, below the 16 foot flood stage. Nearby Rock River at Moline reached 11.9 feet flooding lowlands. two families evacuated to higher ground as smaller streams begin to subside.
Sioux City reports two inmates from Monona county jail in Onawa escaped two weeks ago. They were seen in Sioux City as Woodbury County authorities chased leads. Copenhaver and Faust fled Onawa hours before transfer to Fort Madison penitentiary. Kaeh had two ten year terms for liquor store robbery in Akron and Mapleton.
Ralph Black burn of Des Moines and Joe Gillespie of Des Moines tavern operator pleaded not guilty before District Judge Henry N. Graven to illegal transportation of liquor. They posted $1,000 cash bonds and were arrested after police seized a car loaded with Minnesota stamped liquor and about 20 cases of whisky and rum.
The Wapello County grand jury indicted former Safety Commissioner G Dusty Rhoads and Herbert Pete Bagg on charges of conspiracy as part of the county attorney John D Moon’s probe into alleged liquor and gambling payoffs. Both defendants were released on bonds of 2500. Bagg had earlier signed a statement admitting he acted as a collector for Rhoads in protection payments from tavern owners.

Mrs Daniel Strouse 87 died at her home south of Dublin after a long illness. Funeral services are set for 2 30 Sunday at New Haven church with Rev Arthur Peters officiating. Burial will follow in New Haven cemetery. Survived by daughter Elizabeth, the family’s Washington county life noted. Husband Daniel Strouse preceded in death. twin sons died in 1918 influenza outbreak.

Four men from Washington county left yesterday evening for Des Moines to report for induction into the Navy. Eugene Howard Milno Keith Karr Gilbert L. Allen of Wellman and Paul N. Grecian of Riverside were accepted after pre induction exams at Des Moines and ordered to report today at the naval recruiting station.

Allied forces report bombers from the 15th Army Air Forces attacked the Vienna area today. Major Gen. Nathan F. Twining led B 17 Fortresses and B-24 Liberators on a round trip from Italy exceeding 1000 miles. The communique stated military targets were hit with no fighter opposition.
Weather conditions force postponement of the planned salvage pickup of tin cans and waste paper by trucks scheduled for Saturday. Collectors holding salvaged material should await a new notice on the rescheduled collection date.
Rev and Mrs KE BE Voss of Brighton report unofficial word of their son Private First Class Wendell Voss death. A friend in the North African theater wrote a letter confirming the loss, with censorship preventing details. Voss had been listed as missing in action since July 11, with prior notice on Sept 11, 194?. The Voss family formerly lived in Crawfordsville where Rev Voss served as a Methodist pastor.
British based Royal Air Force bombers struck targets from France to Bulgaria during the night and early today. American communiques report daylight raids flying against the southern Reich, with 125 German planes shot down yesterday.
