Des Moines reports the Iowa House passed a DUI bill requiring blood tests for all arrestees. The measure, approved 66 to 14, heads to the Senate after deleting a provision forcing license applicants to waive objections. The bill, as rewritten, places blood test authority with local peace officers.
Six youths were arrested by Sheriff Art J. Cogtey and held in Kosgoth County jail over a spree of about 20 burglaries. Targeted sites included oil stations elevators garages and pool halls across Kosuth Humboldt and Palo Alto counties in Iowa and nearby Minnesota.
Four senate bills sponsored by Senator Fred Cromwell move to speed up election returns. They require precinct boards to report results on election night to county auditors, begin counting absent voter ballots early, and keep county auditors on duty until all precinct boards have reported.
Amos B Craven 95 longtime Jasper County farmer and Kellogg mayor dies in Des Moines after illness. Former president of Kellogg State Savings Bank for 14 years until 1927, then vice president. Survived by four sons and three daughters. Funeral Wednesday at 2 30 p m with Kellogg burial.
Waterloo resident Leo B. Williams returned last week from Rushville Indiana to answer a charge of wife and child desertion. Williams, once a walkathon and speed derby contestant, is said to have escaped from the North Carolina penitentiary at Raleigh in 1922 while serving a bigamy term. He wrote to a girlfriend in La Porte City Iowa and his wife in Waterloo asking them to return to North Carolina to live with his parents until his sentence is finished.
New York March 18 John L Lewis scheduled a conference of union leaders at 5 p m to decide on a shutdown of the Appalachian soft coal industry and a break in talks with operators if a new wage hour agreement is not drafted before March 31, the expiration date of the present contract. The meeting followed negotiations between United Mine Workers of America representatives and mine owners across eight states.
Governor Stassen said he informed Secretary Jones that deaths in Minnesota and North Dakota were worsened by poor weather service in the region. At least 69 storm victims were reported in funeral homes across the area as an 85 mph wind and blowing snow affected the Red River valley Saturday night into Sunday.
Judge Siegers yesterday granted a decree of divorce in the suit of Cleo Workman Curry against Russel Joseph Curry. In another divorce case acted on yesterday the decree has not yet been filed with the clerk of court.
John G. Winant, in his first public speech as American ambassador, denounced Nazism and pledged U S cooperation with free peoples to establish a free world. He called Nazism the cruelest tyranny and said it questioned every tenet of civilized man.
County treasurer reports ten new cars licensed in the past week and 28 in March bringing county total to 5148 with 1941 plates. Trucks licensed rise by 84 to 83856 year over year. Sheriff H M Putnam will send letters to 252 car owners 35 truck owners 4 motorcycle owners and 250 trailer owners on the delinquent list to urge payment or sworn statements to avoid seizure. Drivers using 1940 plates or 1941 plates without current registration may face arrest and penalties. state patrol will enforce updated plates.
The March meeting of the Milwaukee road East Kansas City division service club was held at the station in Washington Friday night with 34 members present. Officers elected included Chairman J T A Summers, Vice Chairman Fay Cherwinker, and Secretary W E Fer.

Washington city council publishes notice of a public hearing on next year’s appropriations for city departments. The hearing is set for Monday evening at eight in city hall to hear objections to the proposed ordinance and department allocations.
A social event in Richland featured guests from Des Moines Cedar Rapids Ottumwa Haskins Ardon and Muscatine. Music was provided by Oral Sankey and Jimmy Ferrington with refreshments arranged by the social committee. Rell served as host and Harry Hamilton acted as treasurer.
Churchill claimed German submarines and battle cruisers crossed the Atlantic to reach the American side and sank ships as far west as the 42nd meridian east of Newfoundland. The report noted the 42nd meridian lies near the edge of the neutrality zone, with potential sinks north of South America within that zone. Halifax later reported a German submarine heading for the U S northern coast, per Lord Halifax.
About thirty members of the Leon Post of the American Legion and the Legion auxiliary attended a potluck supper at the Legion club rooms to mark the 1919 founding of the Legion in Paris. Mrs. Fred S. Downing chaired the event with Howard P. Miller. Carl Voorhees led the program as Irish songs and stories followed by dancing and table games. Birthday cakes were baked by Mrs. George Birney, Mrs. Fred Downing, and Mrs. Russell Frink.
At the first post election board meeting E A Ralston was re elected superintendent with a one year contract. Richard A Stewart was elected board president. New and holdover members include Mrs Baldrige B F Bostwick Jr Ramseyer and A H E Atchison.
Clayton A. Neiswanger 65, a Cuba veteran and longtime Washington post office employee, died in Tucson after a brief illness. Born 1875 in Washington, he served in the Twenty second U S Infantry during 1898 and later helped organize the local V F W. He retired in 1933 and is survived by two sisters and a daughter, Betty. Burial plans pending in Washington.
Chairman Ralph Martin of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announced the Washington high school band will perform at seven o clock during the Spring Opening of Washington stores Thursday evening. Stores will be open seven to nine with new spring merchandise on display but no sales that night.
The census bureau reports that nearly 373 million rolls of wallpaper are produced annually valued at 25 million dollars. If unrolled and laid end to end they could circle the Earth at the equator 36 times.
A fast Erie freight train collided with a passenger commuter train carrying about 700 workers to a government arsenal in Ravenna Ohio. The crash derailed ten freight cars and four passenger coaches with 300 or more injured, including 125 hospitalized.

Washington county selective service board cannot furnish a man for induction on Friday March 21. Lyle Long reported with a severe sinus and eye infection, delaying his call, while alternate Norman Schoonover has mumps. Five days notice required by law, so another call will be made later when eligible.
Leo Birka 26 of Riverside was arraigned in district court and pleaded guilty to forgery. Judge P J Siegersall sentenced him to 60 days in county jail after his attorney requested leniency. Birka admitted passing an $18 Hills Bank check with the name W C Leeney to Sorrell Auto Parts in Washington.
