The Wapello county board of supervisors announced a ruling to take effect after April 15 barring from courthouse jobs all married women who have husbands working and all relatives of county officials. The action will affect two clerks.
Erwin Drake 38 wins divorce from Marjory 37 in Sioux City after claiming wife refused to cook his breakfast the only meal he could eat at home. Third marriage. lasted 16 months.
IOWA CITY Connie Kuch eman of Bellevue a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority was crowned mecca queen at the annual mecca ball sponsored by engineering students at the State University of Iowa.
In Nashua, Scarlet fever patients rise after seven children had tonsil removals earlier. Three operations were done at once and four later, with the father, a World War veteran, now also ill while the mother remains active.
An automobile driven by Mrs. Elsa Triller of Dubuque overturned into a ditch north of Iowa City injuring two women seriously while a boy escaped unharmed. Mrs. Triller suffered scalp cuts and possible internal injuries. Mrs. Hilda Doran of Dubuque had a fractured skull and arm cuts. Doran's son Arthur, 19, was unharmed as he leaped into the ditch to avoid a car coming toward them. The women were rushed to University hospital in Iowa City.
Harry Edwards faced nine days of persistent hiccups and tried every known remedy. A county doctor claimed cure by administering milk and plenty of it, though Edwards remains unsure if it is permanent.
DES MOINES Carrell John Samuelson 26 was fined 100 dollars for failure to report an accident. His crushed automobile was found against a tree after he claimed the car had been stolen. In a signed statement he said bright lights blinded him and he fled to a relative’s home.
At a Des Moines youth and family life conference at First Methodist Church led by Mrs. Max Mayer affection ranked highest among happiness causes. Sixty two attendees ranked factors in order: affection first, understanding second, physical comfort third, with economic security and family responsibility later.
In Des Moines the Diagonal High School basketball team, defending champion, suffered a 90 to 31 quarterfinal loss to Hubbard, as townsfolk battled a roof fire at the Great Western depot with mayor and city marshal aiding the effort.
The county board of supervisors awarded contracts for surfacing 56 miles of roads with crushed stone and maintenance surfacing on 37.80 miles, oil on 80.52 miles, and culverts and concrete pipe. Bidders included Giristensen Bros Des Moines Sargent Bros Washington Concrete Seneca Petroleum Cooperative Service Co and Deep Rock. Concrete culverts go to Giristensen for 17006.25 and oil to Seneca for 25324.88.
Iowa plan approves a $1,200,000 state house annex to the capitol grounds. Governor Wilson backs the project with rapid legislative support. Financing comes from beer taxes and sinking fund receipts, $600,000 each in 1946 and 1941. The E shaped building will be five or six stories, about 760 feet southeast of the statehouse.
Fire crews responded to a roof blaze at the Elam Johnson residence in the 700 block of West Third Street. The fire was extinguished with a comparatively small loss.
Thomas McEwen of St Marys Riverside won the written spelling contest for grades five to eight at the county courthouse. Second place went to Helen Marie Pacha of Brighton and Phyllis Brown of South Prairie, each missing one word.
Nearly 100 speech students and their coaches from 13 Iowa colleges attended a banquet connected with the ninth annual tourney of the Iowa Forensic Association. Delegates came from Central, Coe, Drake, Dubuque, Iowa State Teachers, Iowa Wesleyan, John Fletcher, Luther, Morningside, Simpson, Penn, Wartburg and Upper Iowa.

Chamber of Commerce committee chair Walter Rukgaber announces a Saturday auction at two o clock for items purchased in Washington stores using dividend dough. Real money not accepted. buyers with limited dough are urged to pool resources. Items will be displayed in their originating stores and sold to the highest bidder.
A wide assortment of items to be sold includes overalls 25, 25 Ibs sugar, silk hose, work shoes, milk pan, chick feeder, glass dishes, manure fork, shirt, socks, rolls, toilet paper, rubbers, chenille bedspread, spring dress, cake pan, Fiesta dishes, clothes hamper, rug, leather gloves, shoes, fly sprayer, Wayne chick starter, wash frock and 60 to 80 small articles valued under 50 cents each.
Charles Owen Jones of Flint Michigan and formerly of Washington died after an automobile accident last Sunday. He had a fractured skull a deep scalp wound and five broken ribs. He never regained consciousness and died in a Pontiac hospital. Burial likely in Mount Pleasant or here. He was born March 16 1874 in Maryland. He was a telegraph operator in Washington and Mount Union and left a son Clair of Wyandotte Michigan. He is survived by two sisters Mrs A J Fields and others.
Washington county health unit to offer eight weekly two hour sessions on home nursing led by Pearl Olion and Alla Hiltunen starting Tuesday March 21. Classes include lectures demonstrations and practice with materials drawn from Red Cross and motherhood. Enrollment is free and registration before or at first class is preferred.
Katie Hartman 67 died at J A Marsh home in Ainsworth after a paralysis stroke and heart trouble. Born near Belleville Illinois June 3 1871 she moved to Ainsworth in 1921 to be with sister Mary Lampert whose death occurred in Columbus Junction. Survived by two sisters Mrs Pertha Foster of La Junta Colorado and Mrs Louise Otten of St Louis with nephews Lester and Louis Lampert. Funeral Monday at L A Jones funeral home at two in the afternoon with Rev J Fredmund. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery.
A large audience at the high school enjoyed three one act plays staged by students from the high school and junior college. The first piece Sweet Sixteen featured amateur players competing for a prize with delays but the correct group winning. The cast included Evelyn Nethergall Jack Mace Lois Humble Everett Burbam Iowa Jean Huber Kenneth Lovelle Richard Wanerus Ruth Wead Harold Wolf Esther Hayes Fred Reid Jane Hicher Helen Rhodebeck Robert Masson Henrietta Marble Richard Knupp William Brown Milo Steele Carl Klein and William Steele. The second play Wise Girl centers on a teen boy asserting independence to impress his mother and two female friends.
